It was then screened on the opening night of the 18th Zurich International Film Festival festival on Sept. 22, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/sally-el-hosaini-netflix-the-swimmers-2022-zurich-festival-1235205708\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per the <em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Netflix released a theatrical trailer for the film in August.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OY4IMBdwH3A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/the_swimmers_2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The film<\/a> tells the story of the Mardini sisters, who fled Syria\u2019s civil war with their family in 2015. While crossing the Aegean Sea, the motor of the boat they were traveling on died. The sisters, who had trained as swimmers in their home country, helped pilot the boat and its passengers to safety for hours in the water. The family settled in Germany, and Yusra Mardini <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimmer-changing-global-perceptions-of-refugees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competed in the 2016 Olympics as part of the Refugee Olympic Team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The film stars <strong>Nathalie Issa<\/strong> and <strong>Matthais Schweighofer.<\/strong>\u00a0El Hosaini co-wrote the screenplay for &#8220;The Swimmers&#8221; with <strong>Jack Throne.<\/strong> In addition to Issa and Schweighofer, the movie stars <strong>Ahmed Malek, James Krishna Floyd, Elmi Rashid Elmi, Kinda Alloush<\/strong> and <strong>Ali Suliman.<\/strong> <strong>Stephen Daldry<\/strong> is the executive producer, with fellow producers <strong>Tim Bevan<\/strong> and <strong>Eric Fellner<\/strong> (both of Working Title) as well as <strong>Ali Jaafar<\/strong> and <strong>Tim Cole.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rare look of swimming on film has garnered some positive reviews, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/23\/movies\/the-swimmers-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <em>New York Times<\/em> calling it<\/a>, &#8220;an inspirational (but rarely sugarcoated) crowd-pleaser.&#8221; From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/reviews\/the-swimmers-movie-review-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rogerebert.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>El Hosaini\u2019s retelling of the Mardini sisters\u2019 story is a moving tribute to them, to the millions of refugees who risked everything to uproot themselves to safety, and a reminder that many of their stories are still ongoing. It\u2019s the kind of inspirational sports movie that\u2019s about more than just the athlete or the big game. &#8220;The Swimmers&#8221;\u00a0is\u00a0about a cause much bigger than the Olympics and
