The Romanian teenager also clocked the No. 3 time in history in the 200 freestyle, going 1:42.97. Meanwhile, Sweden&#8217;s <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> became the most-decorated athlete in the history of the European Championships and Italy continued its rise as a global force.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to LEN, the governing body of European aquatic sports, here are some facts and figures from the most recent European Championships.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Italy established a record for the most medals won in a single Euros with 35, and the 13 gold medals won by the host nation is also a record. According to LEN, Hungary and Great Britain had a combined 30 medals, a total that speaks to the dominance of the Italians.<\/li>\n<li>With 28 career medals, <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> now has more hardware than anyone in the history of Euros. The Swedish star, who captured gold in the 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly on an individual basis, surpassed the legendary <strong>Alexander Popov<\/strong>, who amassed 26 medals during his career. Popov still leads Sjostrom in the gold-medal count, 16 to 15.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lana Pudar<\/strong> became the first athlete from her country, Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina, to medal and capture a title. Pudar first won a bronze in the 100 butterfly and followed with a victory in the 200 butterfly. The teenager is a rising star on the international scene and a likely medal contender in the 200 fly at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.<\/li>\n<li>The Netherlands&#8217; <strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> walked away with the most medals from the competition with seven, including solo triumphs in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. The Dutchwoman also earned a silver medal in the 200 individual medley and helped her country onto the podium in four relays.<\/li>\n<li>The world record <strong>David Popovici<\/strong> set in the 100 freestyle, a 46.86 that bettered the 2009 standard of Cesar Cielo (46.91), was the highest-scoring swim of the meet according to the FINA points table. Popovici&#8217;s effort was worth 1,003 points.
