{"id":511663,"date":"2022-08-17T10:08:27","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T17:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=511663"},"modified":"2022-08-17T12:29:30","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T19:29:30","slug":"european-championships-lukas-maertens-claims-400-free-title-for-a-germany-1-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-lukas-maertens-claims-400-free-title-for-a-germany-1-3\/","title":{"rendered":"European Championships: Lukas Maertens Sets 400 Free Championship Record For Gold; Germany Claim 1-3"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>European Championships: Lukas Maertens Sets 400 Free Championship Record For Gold; Germany Claim 1-3<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Lukas Maertens<\/strong> set a championship record of 3:42.50 as he eased to victory in the 400 free at the European Championships in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>It concluded a superb season for the 20-year-old who also won 800 silver at the <strong>Foro Italico<\/strong> to add to teh 400 silver he claimed at the World Championships in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>Maertens was stroke for stroke with early leader <strong>Antonio Djakovic<\/strong> of Switzerland before going ahead at the 200m mark.<\/p>\n<p>He extended his lead throughout to claim victory ahead of Djakovic (3:43.93) who claimed the first Swiss medal in the event with <strong>Henning Muehlleitner<\/strong> making it a German one-three in 3:44.53.<\/p>\n<p>Splits: 53.98\/1:50.63\/2:47.10\/3:42.50<\/p>\n<p>Maertens sliced 1.51secs off <strong>Gabriele Detti<\/strong>&#8216;s championship record of 3:44.01 from London in 2016.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-entry-lists-sarah-sjostrom-focused-on-sprints-kristof-milak-eyeing-sub-150-in-200-butterfly\/\">Rome entry lists<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/roma2022.microplustimingservices.com\/indexRoma2022_web.php?s=TG9hZENhbGVuZGFyaW8oJzAnKTs=&amp;cat=ASM&amp;page=001&amp;spec=001&amp;bat=001&amp;td=STL1&amp;hg=&amp;descIT=TWVuwqAtwqA1MCBtIFN0aWxlIExpYmVybyAtIFByZWxpbWluYXJ5&amp;descEN=TWVuwqAtwqA1MG0gRnJlZXN0eWxlIC0gUHJlbGltaW5hcnk=&amp;descFR=TWVuwqAtwqA1MCBtIE5hZ2UgTGlicmUgLSBQcmVsaW1pbmFyeQ==&amp;curCatSel_M_F=9:00&amp;sport=Swimming\">Rome results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2022-european-championships-rome\">Complete meet coverage<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>David Popovici<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-day-7-prelims-david-popovici-withdraws-from-400-free-final-simona-quadarella-eyes-treble-treble\/\">had progressed fourth before withdrawing from the final<\/a> so there would be no tilt at the 100-200-400 treble.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the 17-year-old will train for a couple of days before heading off to Lima, Peru, for the World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Maertens becomes the fifth German winner of the event &#8211; with <strong>Uwe Dassler<\/strong> twice gold medallist in 1985 and 1987 &#8211; and the first since <strong>Paul Biedermann<\/strong> at Debrecen 2012.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was hoping for a medal, I had already reached the second place in the 800m and I knew I was in a good condition to make the podium here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This event is my specialty so it\u2019s more than satisfying to get the gold at the end.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Djakovic&#8217;s time was a Swiss record\u00a0and he was almost lost for words, tearfully saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;At the beginning of the year I couldn\u2019t have even imagined that I was fighting for the medals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Back then I got Covid, afterwards I had trouble with my lungs and it took me three months to really get back into shape.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the end, now I have two silvers, I wasn\u2019t expecting this, I\u2019m really emotional now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My parents were also here and watch me winning my first senior medals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the meantime, I also passed my last exams \u2013 so quite unexpectedly, this season is just ending in the perfect way.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Muehlleitner added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis was just so much fun. In the callroom you could tell we were all really excited to race each other.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This final was quite young with a set of newcomers and some more experienced swimmers so it was a great mix.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone was really just excited to get out there.
