ONE division record fell at the Michigan High School Boys Division 3 Swimming and Diving Championships March 7-8. The meet was held in short course yards at the Holland Aquatic Center.

The record went to St. Joseph’s 400 free relay of seniors Jeff Coard, Michael Orspurng and Mitchell Davis, plus junior Ben Carter. The quartet posted a 3:10.19, taking down Grand Rapids Christian’s 3:11.67 from 2012.

The 200 free relay featured a very unusual three-way tie for first. Coming in with exact times of 1:27.08 were East Grand Rapids (sophomores Nathan Hein and Andy MacGregor, plus seniors Kevin Baumann and Kurt Swieter), Detroit Country Day (seniors Billy Packer, Cal Coffman, Michael Nadolski and junior Conor Ryan), and Chelsea (seniors David Alday and Johnny Mangner, sophomore Carter Engler and freshman Joey Magner).

Cransbrook-Kingwood’s 200 medley relay of junior Mitch Buccalo, sophomores Giorgio Del Grosso and Andrew Guan, and junior Frankie Misra combined for a 1:36.12.

Holland Christian senior Parker Cook-Weeks claimed the 500 free title for the third straight year in 4:36.61 and the 200 free for the second time with his 1:38.95. Cook-Weeks’ 200 free time was just 6-hundredths off the Division 3 mark set by Justin Glanda in 2011.

Alex Jirgens, a senior at Otsego, was the 100 free champ, edging Milan senior Oliver Smith, 46.42 to 46.53. Smith’s 20.78 gave him first in the 50 free.

St. Joseph senior Mitchell Davis completed the 100 breast in 57.55, good for first. Also finding their way to the top of the podium were Detroit Country Day sophomore Brendan Gatward (100 back, 52.38) and Mitch Buccalo, a Cranbrook-Kingswood junior (200 IM, 1:53.43). Chelsea junior Jacob Burris was the diving champion, scoring 452.05 points.

The Cranbrook-Kingswood Cranes, who were runners-up last year, put together 297 points for their first Division 3 team title. Chelsea followed in second with 273.33 points, with East Grand Rapids third (256.83), St. Joseph fourth (197) and Detroit Country Day fifth (182.33).

Results For: High School State Championships: Michigan Boys Division 3

Submit your All America Application now

HOLLAND, Michigan, March 9.
