{"id":511543,"date":"2022-08-16T10:23:30","date_gmt":"2022-08-16T17:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=511543"},"modified":"2022-08-16T15:52:34","modified_gmt":"2022-08-16T22:52:34","slug":"european-championships-mykhailo-romanchuk-dedicates-1500-free-win-to-father-on-return-from-war-in-eastern-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-mykhailo-romanchuk-dedicates-1500-free-win-to-father-on-return-from-war-in-eastern-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"European Championships: Mykhailo Romanchuk Dedicates 1500 Free Win To Father On Return From War In Eastern Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>European Championships: Mykhailo Romanchuk Goes 14:36.10 To Defend 1500 Free Title; Dedicates Win To Father On Return From War In Eastern Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mykhailo Romanchuk<\/strong> went 14:36.10 to win a second straight 1500 free title at the <strong>European Championships<\/strong> in Rome and dedicated victory to his father who has returned from fighting against Russia in Eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>It was a national record for the Ukrainian who sat on the lane rope, absorbing a rousing reception from the Foro Italico crowd and beating his heart with his hand.<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u2019s for my country; it\u2019s my land, it\u2019s my home and I give everything for my country.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong> repeated his second place at the previous Europeans in 14:39.79 with <strong>Damien Joly<\/strong> of France third in 14:50.86.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-entry-lists-sarah-sjostrom-focused-on-sprints-kristof-milak-eyeing-sub-150-in-200-butterfly\/\">Rome entry lists<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/roma2022.microplustimingservices.com\/indexRoma2022_web.php?s=TG9hZENhbGVuZGFyaW8oJzAnKTs=&amp;cat=ASM&amp;page=001&amp;spec=001&amp;bat=001&amp;td=STL1&amp;hg=&amp;descIT=TWVuwqAtwqA1MCBtIFN0aWxlIExpYmVybyAtIFByZWxpbWluYXJ5&amp;descEN=TWVuwqAtwqA1MG0gRnJlZXN0eWxlIC0gUHJlbGltaW5hcnk=&amp;descFR=TWVuwqAtwqA1MCBtIE5hZ2UgTGlicmUgLSBQcmVsaW1pbmFyeQ==&amp;curCatSel_M_F=9:00&amp;sport=Swimming\">Rome results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2022-european-championships-rome\">Complete meet coverage<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-ukrainian-mykhailo-romanchuk-pleads-to-maintain-ban-on-russia\/\">Mykhailo Romanchuk In Plea As Father Fights In Eastern Ukraine<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There was more emotion on the podium as the big screen beamed pictures of a tearful Romanchuk to the crowd who rose as one, cheering the Ukrainian.<\/p>\n<p>The tears were for his father who had returned home after fighting the Russians in Eastern Ukraine following their invasion in February.<\/p>\n<p>Romanchuk told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I was thinking about my father that he\u2019s back home now and this win is for him, for all the Ukrainians, for the army who is defending our country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now the rotation has started and he is back three days ago so it is a really emotional time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My mind now is much more relaxed so I know that my father is safe, that he is at home and for me it\u2019s a little bit easier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But the war is not finished so of course I am still reading the news about Ukraine, the army, about everything.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So it is a mixture of emotions but I am happy that my family now is together which for me is the main thing.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For months Romanchuk has lived with his father being on the frontline.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I was talking with him once a day (when he was fighting): sometimes when he didn\u2019t contact me in the morning it was really so stressful because I didn\u2019t know what happened that night and sometimes it was really so hard.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Does he fear the war in Ukraine is slipping down the news agenda in Europe?<\/p>\n<p>The four-time world medallist said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Sometimes they forget the war is still going on.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But the war is still there in our home and our land and we will fight; we are fighting, we will fight to the end and we will win for sure. After the World Championships I was in a really bad mood and I needed to find a new motivation for me.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These European Championships are so emotional: after the 800m free I was mad at myself because I screwed up the entire race, but somehow I managed to get back from there and get into great shape for this final.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I enjoyed the atmosphere here, it gave me a lot of power and really felt I could swim better and better as I felt I was faster than Greg and I could beat him in front the home crowd.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today I was faster than him, next time he can be faster than me, it\u2019s like a ping-pong match between us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Massive thanks go for the German team as they gave me the opportunity for the preparations and for the Ukrainians who
