prelims under the two-per-nation rule on day five of the European Championships in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>The Olympic bronze medallist was fifth overall but third Italian behind <strong>Alberto Razzetti<\/strong> and <strong>Giacomo Carini<\/strong> and so bowed out at the Foro Italico.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly in the men&#8217;s 50 breaststroke, Italians filled the top four slots but only the top two &#8211; <strong>Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong> and <strong>Simone Cerasuolo &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>went through.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Florian Wellbrock<\/strong> reached the 1500m freestyle final in ensure progress to the semis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong>, European and world champion over 100m, went in the final prelim knowing two of his teammates had posted 26.85 and 26.89.<\/p>\n<p>He clocked 26.71 to qualify with <strong>Simone Cerasuolo<\/strong> (26.85) but there was no further progress for<strong> Fabio Scozzoli<\/strong> (26.89) or <strong>Federico Poggio<\/strong> (27.07) with the Italian quartet occupying the top four slots but the two-per-nation rule being applied.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" backstroke<\/h3>\n<p>Reigning champion <strong>Kathleen Dawson<\/strong> isn&#8217;t in Rome as she continues her recovery from injury with <strong>Kira Toussaint<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-european-championships-kathleen-dawson-wins-gold-again-in-100-back-re-swim\/\">who was relegated from silver to fourth following a reswim after the first final was declared void in Budapest,<\/a> topping the qualifiers in 59.59, the only woman inside a minute.<\/p>\n<p>Britain&#8217;s <strong>Medi Harris<\/strong> was next through in on Sunday evening and went in the final heat to post 1:54.97 and top qualification where again the two-per-nation rule raised its head for the host nation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alberto Razzetti<\/strong> (1:55.44) and <strong>Giacomo Carini<\/strong> (1:55.57) both progressed but Olympic bronze medallist <strong>Federico Burdisso<\/strong> didn&#8217;t make it through after finishing third among
