SANTIAGO, Chile, March 8. DAY two of the South American Games featured a world top 10 time by Leonardo De Deus, and an exhausting double by Andreina Pinto in Santiago, Chile.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Leonardo De Deus moved up from 10th in the world in the men’s 200-meter fly to eighth overall as he dropped a 1:57.84 for the win this evening. With the swim, he leapfrogged Tom Luchsinger (1:57.93) and Velimir Stjapanovic in the world rankings. Peru’s Mauricio Villanueva touched second in 1:58.81 with Colombia’s Andres Montoya winding up third in 1:58.99 as he couldn’t hold off Villanueva’s final charge.<\/p>\n

Venezuela’s Alberto Subirats raced his way to a championship title in 54.31 in the men’s 100-meter backstroke. That swim put him about two tenths outside of the world top 10 currently anchored by Chris Walker-Hebborn’s 54.15 from Berlin. Argentina’s Federico Grabich turned in a 55.22 to take second overall, while Brazil’s Fernando Do Santos picked up third in 55.27.<\/p>\n

Venezuela snared another gold medal with an 8:35.41 from Andreina Pinto in the women’s 800-meter freestyle. Chile’s Kristel Kobrich posted an 8:37.19 for second overall with Argentina’s Cecilia Biagioli earning third in the event with an 8:45.68.<\/p>\n

Pinto pulled off a difficult double with a 4:51.17 in the women’s 400-meter IM, while Argentina’s Virginia Bardach took second in 4:52.94. Brazil’s Julia Gerotto snatched third with a time of 4:55.36.<\/p>\n

Argentina went 1-2 in the men’s 400-meter freestyle finale with Martin Naidich hitting the wall in 3:56.23 for the win, while Juan Martin Pereyra touched just behind with a 3:56.80. Both had trailed Brazil’s Marcos De Oliveira heading into the 350-meter mark, with Naidich turning fourth in the field, but Naidich dropped a 27.31 to win the title. Pereyra came home in 28.72, while De Oliveira fell to third with a 29.03 final 50 en route to posting a 3:56.89 in a close finish.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s female sprint corps rolled to a 1-2 finish in the women’s 100-meter free. Larissa De Oliveira topped the sprint with a time of 55.70, while Graciele Herrmann finished runner-up with a 56.36. Suriname’s Chinyere Pigot earned third-place honors in 56.92. That just missed Pigot’s Surinamese record of 56.89.<\/p>\n

Colombia’s Carolina Colorado won the women’s 200-meter backstroke by more than a second with a 2:14.42. Argentina’s Andrea Berrino placed second in 2:15.52 with Brazil’s Natalie De Luccas checking in third with a 2:17.96.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s clinched the men’s 800-meter free relay title with a 7:25.35 from Nicolas De Oliveira, Thiago Pereira, Fernando Da Silva and Fernando Do Santos. Colombia raced to second in 7:30.55 with Venezuela picking up third in 7:30.67.<\/p>\n
