SANTIAGO, Chile, March 7. SOME of the best swimmers out of South America have converged on the city of Santiago, Chile, for the South American Games.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Felipe Lima nearly cleared his season best with a 1:01.63 to win the men’s 100-meter breaststroke. That swim just missed his ninth-ranked time of 1:01.47 from January in Perth, Australia. Venezuela’s Carlos Claverie Borgiani picked up second in 1:02.19 with Panama’s Edgar Crespo earning third in 1:02.58.<\/p>\n

Argentina’s Martin Naidich picked up the men’s 800-meter freestyle title in 8:05.28 to kick the evening off with Ecuador’s Esteban Enderica Salgado posting a second-place time of 8:07.78. Brazil’s Marcos Ferrari De Oliveira earned third-place honors in 8:09.93.<\/p>\n

Venezuela’s Andreina Pinto crushed the women’s 400-meter freestyle field with a 4:10.71 for the win, while Chile’s Kristel Kobrich touched second in 4:15.15. Brazil’s Manuella Duarte Lyrio rounded out the top three in 4:20.86.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Leonardo De Deus followed with a 2:00.28 to capture the men’s 200-meter backstroke crown with Paraguay’s Matias Lopez placing second overall in 2:02.43. Colombia’s David Cespedes Echeverri raced his way to third in 2:04.12.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Daynara Ferreira De Paula picked up the women’s 100-meter fly title in 59.35 as the only swimmer under a minute in the event. Colombia’s Caroline Colorado finished second in 1:00.15 with Brazil’s Etienne Medeiros posting a third-place time of 1:00.88.<\/p>\n

Argentina went 1-2 in the women’s 200-meter IM with Virginia Bardach winning in 2:19.44. Florencia Perotti hit the wall second in 2:20.67 with Brazil’s Julia Gerotto winding up third in 2:21.22. Argentina snared another win with a head-to-head battle between Federico Grabich and Brazil’s Nicolas De Oliveira, 1:49.39 to 1:49.72, in the men’s 200-meter free. Peru’s Mauricio Villanueva snagged third in 1:50.30.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s Larissa De Oliveira, Jessica Cavalheiro, Carolina Queiroz and Manuella Lyrio won the women’s 800-meter freestyle relay to close the night with an 8:18.34. Venezuela’s Wendy Crespo, Erika Torrellas, Yennifer Mendoza and Andreina Pinto took second in 8:23.11, while Colombia’s Carolina Colorado, Maria Pugliese, Maria Munoz and Jessica Camposano placed third just behind in 8:23.77.<\/p>\n
