IT was a night for intense competition and some light-hearted respect.

Princeton and Harvard are locked up in what looks like an epic battle for the 2003 Eastern Intercollegiate League team crown. The Tigers, who trailed Harvard by more than 100 points, now have an 11-point lead after two days of the competition.

But all the combatants stopped for a moment before the final event of the night — the 800-yard freestyle relay — to honor Navy head coach Lee Lawrence. Lawrence will retire after this season, his 30th at the academy. His colleagues took this time to wish him well and to thank him for his years of commitment to collegiate swimming.

Princeton kept up the torrid pace of this meet by winning the first event of the night in meet-record time. The 200 medley relay of Stephen Fleming, Garth Fealey, Jess Gage and Jeremy Tillman finished first in 1 minute 30.33 seconds.

Harvard's John Cole won his second individual event of the meet as he touched first in the 1000 free in a time of 9:02.25. Teammate Dan Shevchik then won the 400 IM in 3:53.65.

The incredible run of Princeton's Gage continued in the 100 fly, which he won in a meet-record 47.10, which also was an automatic NCAA qualifying cut. For Gage, it was his third win of the meet, and all three times were new meet records.

Princeton's Carl Hessler took the 200 free in 1:36.89 and helped draw Princeton to within 60 points in the team race. The Tigers cut the lead to 12 points as Fealey won the 100 breast, breaking his own meet record with a time of 54.02. That was an automatic NCAA cut as well.

Princeton's Pat Donohue took gold in the 100 back with a time of 48.84. The Tigers then had a three-point lead in the overall standings. The final event — the 800 free relay — went to the Princeton quartet of Justin Chiles, Juan Valdivieso, Mike Salerno and Hessler.

Ivy League Championships Day 2

1.
