{"id":510157,"date":"2022-07-30T13:22:36","date_gmt":"2022-07-30T20:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=510157"},"modified":"2022-07-30T17:00:18","modified_gmt":"2022-07-31T00:00:18","slug":"commonwealth-games-maggie-mac-neil-tops-emma-mckeon-in-epic-100-fly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/commonwealth-games-maggie-mac-neil-tops-emma-mckeon-in-epic-100-fly\/","title":{"rendered":"Commonwealth Games: Maggie Mac Neil Tops Emma McKeon in Epic 100 Fly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Commonwealth Games: Maggie Mac Neil Tops Emma McKeon in Epic 100 Fly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A rematch of the women\u2019s 100 butterfly final at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday at the Commonwealth Games did not disappoint.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maggie Mac Neil<\/strong> came out on top again, as she did last summer in Tokyo, in an outstanding race, .02 ahead of Tokyo bronze medalist <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> is a grandstand final.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/results.birmingham2022.com\/#\/athletic-sports-schedule\/SWM\/*\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2022-commenwealth-games-birmingham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Information Page<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mac Neil got to the wall first in 56.36. That time is her fastest of the season and is the fourth-fastest in the world in 2022. McKeon, in 56.38, slots into fifth in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Mac Neil also took down McKeon\u2019s Commonwealth Games record from 2018 (56.78).<\/p>\n<p>The splits for both swimmers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MacNeil 26.53 \u2013 29.83 \u2013 56.36<\/li>\n<li>McKeon 26.41 &#8211; 29.97 \u2013 56.38<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both times would\u2019ve won bronze at the 2022 World Championships. McKeon skipped that event, while Mac Neil elected to swim only relays. That physical and mental break seems to be paying off for the Canadian.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In retrospect, I think that was the best decision I made for myself at the time, both physically and emotionally,&#8221; Mac Neil said last week during a media Zoom call before the Games. &#8220;My elbow is healing up well, so that\u2019s always good news to hear, and I\u2019ve little problem with it since. And just being able to focus on the relays, it\u2019s been such a mainstay on the team since, first starting in Rio and continuing to grow since then. Getting a lot of medals in the relays was definitely our big goal going into Budapest, so I was glad that I could step in that moment and help out those girls, which is what I was there to do. I learned a lot I think about myself and being a team player.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both swimmers separated from the pack early. Mac Neil\u2019s margin ended up coming off the start, where she had a .07 edge in reaction time.<\/p>\n<p>The bronze medal went to <strong>Brianna Throssell<\/strong> in 57.50. She was solidly ahead of countrywoman <strong>Alex Perkins<\/strong> by .37. Canada\u2019s <strong>Katerine Savard<\/strong> finished fifth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"510194\"
