AUSTIN, Texas, March 6. A blazing 200 yard freestyle by Circle C's Nate Dusing highlighted the first day of competition at the American Short Course Championships at the University of Texas in Austin.<\/p>\n

Dusing, a 2001 graduate of the University of Texas, overwhelmed the field, splitting 45.85 at the 100 and touching home in 1:34.11, the nation's fastest time this season.<\/p>\n

Another 2001 UT grad, Colleen Lanne, representing Texas Aquatics, took the women's 200 free. Like Dusing, she led all the way. Splitting 51.43, Lanne finished with a solid 1:46.63, exactly a second ahead of 16 year-old Amanda AWeir of SwimAtlanta. Slovenian Anja Carman, representing Bolles was third (1:47.76) and Miami Swimming's Christina Swindle fourth (1:48.11).<\/p>\n

Veterans Kristy Kowal and Jeremy McDonnell took the 100 breast. Kowal, 24, swimming for the Athens bUlldogs, won the women's event in a swift 1:00.69, holding off a determined 16 year-old, Genna Patterson of Tualatin Hills (1:01.27).<\/p>\n

Circle C's McDonnell won the men's event in 53.64, well in front of U.T.'s Christian Schurr (54.85).<\/p>\n

Fifteen year-old Dana Vollmer of Fort Worth, took the women's 100 fly in a swift 53.51, edging Cal Aquatics' Haley Cope (53.85). They were followed to the wall by
\nSwimAtlanta's Rachel Myco (54.81) and Circle C's Andrea Axtell, 16 (54.85).<\/p>\n

Former USC Trojan, Josh Ilika, representing his native Mexico, beat two US Olympians in the 100 fly. Ilika posted a speedy 46.94, disposing of Tommy Hannan (47.01) and Dusing (47.27).<\/p>\n
