{"id":509963,"date":"2022-07-29T18:17:52","date_gmt":"2022-07-30T01:17:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=509963"},"modified":"2022-07-29T23:57:42","modified_gmt":"2022-07-30T06:57:42","slug":"u-s-nationals-josh-matheny-drops-59-44-to-win-100-breast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-nationals-josh-matheny-drops-59-44-to-win-100-breast\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Nationals: Josh Matheny Drops 59.44 to Win 100 Breast (VIDEO)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>U.S. Nationals: Josh Matheny Drops 59.44 to Win 100 Breast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stop me if you\u2019ve heard this before: Indiana breaststroke reigns supreme.<\/p>\n<p>Augmenting the accolades so frequent on the women\u2019s side, <strong>Josh Matheny<\/strong> added a national title Friday night at Phillips 66 Nationals in Irvine, Calif., going a personal-best 59.44 to win.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the second best time of the day for Matheny, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-nationals-josh-matheny-breaks-100-in-mens-100-breast-kaitlyn-dobler-crushes-womens-field\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broke one minute for the first time in the morning<\/a>. He rallied with the fastest final 50 in the field of 31.23 to get to the wall first and win a national title.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2022-phillips-66-usa-national-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2022\/phillips-66-national-championships-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The time is also the ninth fastest in the world in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of things about Bloomington that are special,\u201d Matheny, a rising sophomore, said. \u201cThe breaststroke group, it\u2019s a super close and interesting group. I wouldn\u2019t be where I am today without all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to global mainstays <strong>Annie Lazor<\/strong> and <strong>Lilly King,<\/strong> the IU group produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-nationals-mackenzie-looze-outduels-anna-keating-for-200-breast-crown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women\u2019s 200 breast national champ<\/a> <strong>Mackenzie Looze<\/strong> earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Matheny has felt stuck at a minute-point. Getting under that in the morning provided him &#8220;an explosion of confidence&#8221; to carry into the evening. It also paid off the work he&#8217;s done on his underwaters to burnish what is one of the stronger above-water strokes in the field.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know it didn\u2019t look like it, but those were both really good pullouts for me,&#8221; Matheny said. &#8220;That\u2019s something I\u2019ve been working on basically all summer, to try to improve my turn and underwater aspect. It definitely came in handy. I was not as far behind as I normally up. At that point, around the 25 and 75, is where I kind of turned on the jets in each 50. I always feel like the back half of my long-course races is where I turn on the jets and leave people in the dust, and that\u2019s kind of what ended up happening today, which I\u2019m extremely thankful for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Second on Friday night was <strong>Caspar Corbeau,<\/strong> the Dutch Olympian, the only other one under a minute at 59.51. He had been out first in 28.01, two tenths clear of Matheny.<\/p>\n<p>Third was <strong>Kevin Housman<\/strong> in 1:00.24, just .06 up on <strong>Jason Louser.<\/strong> Minnesota NCAA champion <strong>Max McHugh<\/strong> was fifth in 1:00.82.<\/p>\n<p>The B final was quite the chaotic one, almost superior in intrigue and star power. For 60-plus meters, it appeared that outside smoke would win the day, and not just because the occupants of those outside lanes were American record-holder <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-nationals-matt-fallon-crushes-200-breast-field-with-207-91-third-fastest-in-the-world-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">200 breast champ<\/a> <strong>Matt Fallon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the end, the win went to <strong>Nick Mahabir,<\/strong> a 16-year-old from Coronado Swim Association Team Elite. He won in 1:00.37, a time that would be fifth in the final. It\u2019s also downs the Singaporean national record, sets earlier this year by <strong>Maximilian Ang<\/strong> at the Southeast Asian Games, by more than a second in 1:01.58.<\/p>\n<p>Fallon was second in 1:00.75, Andrew was fourth in 1:00.90.
