PHOENIX, Arizona, March 3. TWO Masters swimming short course yards national records in the 100 breaststroke fell recently, as two notable names in the sport raced against younger competitors in USA Swimming meets.<\/p>\n
On February 21, Todd Torres shattered the national record in the 45-49 age group in the 100 breast with a 56.78. Swimming in the prelims of the North Carolina Senior Championships, Torres took down the 57.87 swum by Chris Weissman in 2009. Torres qualified fourth for finals, but scratched when he herniated a disc in his back. Torres, 45, was an Olympian for Puerto Rico at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics and celebrates his first U.S. Masters Swimming national record.<\/p>\n
David Guthrie, 53, was a multiple record breaker in 2013, resetting eight of the nine breaststroke marks across three courses in the 50-54 age group. His first record of 2014 was a 58.50 in the 100 breast in the D final of the Speedo Champions Series meet last weekend in College Station, Texas.
