With the Big Ten featuring more schools than not with men&#8217;s swim teams, maybe a discussion will take place.<\/p>\n<p>The UCLA program wasn\u2019t cut because of a lack of success in the water. The men\u2019s swimming and diving team had won 41 individual national championships, thanks to standouts such as <strong>Brian Goodell<\/strong>, <strong>Tom Jager<\/strong> and <strong>Mike Burton<\/strong>. The Bruins won the NCAA championship in 1982, one year after a runnerup finish. The men\u2019s program also sent 16 Bruins to the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/college\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More college news<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The move to the Big Ten will add significant revenue that will help all of the Olympic sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you love Olympic sports, you should be a fan of this move,\u201d UCLA Athletic Director <strong>Martin Jarmond<\/strong> told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/ucla\/story\/2022-07-05\/ucla-cut-sports-programs-big-ten\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a> on Tuesday. \u201cWhen your program is in significant debt, it\u2019s difficult just to maintain, never mind to invest. This not only preserves the programs now \u2014 which was not a given \u2014 but also will allow us to invest in them. This move allows us to reimagine what UCLA athletics can be with more strategic investment and resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the L.A. Times report, UCLA\u2019s athletic department had run up a $102.8-million deficit the past three years. With the move, it\u2019s conceivable that the Bruins could receive $100 million from the Big Ten per year if the expanded conference can snag the projected $1-billion media rights deal that\u2019s set to begin in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>For swimming, there is so much high school talent in California, it shouldn\u2019t be difficult for the Bruins to put together a competitive program quickly should the team be reinstated.<\/p>\n<p>More than 30 colleges nationwide have shed sports in the last couple of years because of financial issues, especially during the pandemic, including the University of Iowa men\u2019s swimming and diving program.<\/p>\n<p>The benefit of having women\u2019s and men\u2019s sports is huge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we had a men\u2019s team, we were always in the top 10,\u201d UCLA coach <strong>Cyndi Gallagher<\/strong> told the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailybruin.com\/2017\/01\/11\/the-hull-shebang-ucla-should-reinstate-mens-swimming-and-diving-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Bruin<\/a> in 2004. \u201cSwimming is a community sport. You swim together growing up and there\u2019s a visibility factor whether you train together or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, UCLA was reported by USA Today to have the 25th-most lucrative athletics department \u2014 again all schools ahead of it have men\u2019s swimming and diving.<\/p>\n<p>With the right push, the move to the Big Ten could be the first big step for UCLA to bring back men\u2019s swimming.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Could UCLA&#8217;s Move to Big Ten Spark Return of Men&#8217;s Swimming and Diving?
