ANN ARBOR, Michigan, March 1. THE final prelim session at the Big 10 men\u2019s swimming and diving championships set up exciting races in just about every event. For the first time at this meet, the Michigan Wolverines did not dominate in qualifying as the top seed in the events, posting only the fastest time in the 200 fly.<\/p>\n

That top seed went to Dylan Bosch, who was the top swimmer in the collegiate standings in the 200 fly coming into the meet with a 1:41.01 from December\u2019s USA Swimming nationals. Bosch swam a 1:40.37 in prelims to solidify his place at the top of the ranks. It\u2019s also a meet record, surpassing his own 1:41.18 from last year. Tom Shields\u2019 NCAA record of 1:39.65 could be put on notice in tonight\u2019s finals. It should be noted that Shields also tied Michael Phelps\u2019 U.S. Open record when winning the NCAA title last year, but with Bosch hailing from South Africa, the shared American record is not in jeopardy.<\/p>\n

Bosch was under record pace at the 100-yard and 150-yard marks today, posting splits of 47.53 and 1:13.27 to Shields\u2019 48.04 and 1:13.79. Bosch likely took his foot off the gas in the final 50 yards, posting a 27.10 to fall 1.5 seconds off the 27.54 he split in the third 50 yards.<\/p>\n

After an 11-year drought in conference titles, Penn State won two last night in the 200 free relay and 100 back. Shane Ryan was part of both of those wins, and could give the Nittany Lions a third in the 100 free. He\u2019s seeded second with a 42.46 behind Minnesota\u2019s Derek Toomey, the 50 free conference champion, who swam a 42.42. Both broke Toomey\u2019s meet record of 42.60 from last year and were personal bests for them. Also breaking 43 seconds was Michigan\u2019s Bruno Ortiz with a 42.67.<\/p>\n

Drew teDuits, the reigning NCAA champion in the 200 back, gave Wisconsin its first top seed of the meet with a 1:40.23, with Indiana\u2019s Eric Ress right behind with a 1:40.39. Both will be chasing Matt Grevers\u2019 meet record of 1:39.53 from 2007.<\/p>\n

Cody Miller looks to defend his conference title in the 200 breaststroke, posting a 1:53.78. He\u2019ll be looking to get close to his meet record of 1:51.03 that he swam to win the title last year. He might need it to fend off Purdue\u2019s Lyam Dias, who is having a banner meet so far. He set a school record of 52.49 to finish fourth in the 100 breast last night and qualified second in the 200 today with a 1:54.43 to break Giordan Pogioli\u2019s school record of 1:54.85. Richard Funk of Michigan posted a 1:54.88 to qualify third.<\/p>\n
