{"id":507962,"date":"2022-06-30T03:27:58","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T10:27:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=507962"},"modified":"2022-07-02T05:37:57","modified_gmt":"2022-07-02T12:37:57","slug":"olympics-relay-qualification-for-2024-games-in-paris-could-be-unfair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-relay-qualification-for-2024-games-in-paris-could-be-unfair\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympics Relay Qualification For 2024 Games in Paris Could Feature Unfair Setup (Updated)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Olympics Relay Qualification For 2024 Games in Paris Could Feature Unfair Setup<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>British Swimming<\/strong> head coach <strong>Bill Furniss<\/strong> says \u201cfairness is fundamental in sport\u201d after it emerged that\u00a0national federations will have to qualify relay teams for the <strong>Paris Olympics<\/strong> at the <strong>Doha worlds<\/strong> in January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The current practice is for 12 relay teams to qualify at the World Championships 12 months ahead of the Games with a further four booking their slot at FINA-approved qualification events.<\/p>\n<p>However, sources say FINA has stated only the top-three finishers in each relay will qualify at the 2023 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan, with the remaining slots to be filled in Doha, six months ahead of the Games.<\/p>\n<p>This will result in an immediate advantage for some nations given their strength in depth and likelihood they would seal relay spots in Fukuoka in July 2023, meaning there would be no trip to Doha.<\/p>\n<p>The USA finished on the podium at the Budapest worlds in every relay that is on the Olympic programme with Australia on all but one.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifying relays in Fukuoka would mean an uninterrupted preparation for Paris while other countries would have to send their elite teams \u2013 prepared and rested &#8211; to Doha in early 2024.<\/p>\n<p>When asked in Budapest, Furniss said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI don\u2019t know because that might not happen so that\u2019s a hypothetical question.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we have to be fair in sport and I think if that was to happen, then it would be very unfair on all the swimmers in relays who are not qualified top three. We&#8217;ll see what happens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, it would be a question of fairness. I think if you qualify top three, it&#8217;s obvious to me that if that did happen, those teams would be at an advantage to everybody else.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So hopefully we&#8217;ll see how that plays out but fairness is fundamental in sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t heard much about that: I\u2019ve heard a few rumours here but I\u2019m hoping the federations sit down and some sensible talks take place.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On reaching out to FINA, the governing body said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">&#8220;W<\/span>e cannot speculate publicly on the Olympic Qualification System for Paris 2024 before it is final.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They did though state their commitment to addressing concerns directly with federations and coaches while revealing dialogue\u00a0 already taking place.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;More than ever, FINA is committed to ensuring that all voices and opinions are heard and represented equally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span lang=\"EN-GB\">FINA has already discussed the proposed qualification system with many athletes, coaches and administrators and such conversations are ongoing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paris will take place just months after Doha following the rejigging of the schedule after the one-year delay to the Tokyo Games.<\/p>\n<p>This saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-in-fukuoka-rescheduled-to-may-2022-fina-announce\/\">Fukuoka initially rescheduled to May 2022<\/a> only for the event <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-confirms-fukuoka-worlds-rescheduled-for-july-2023-doha-edition-switched-to-january-2024\/\">to be pushed back once more to 2023<\/a>, when Doha had been due to stage the long-course worlds.<\/p>\n<p>Doha was rearranged for January 2024 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-confirms-fukuoka-worlds-rescheduled-for-july-2023-doha-edition-switched-to-january-2024\/\">prompting <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> to ask<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cDoes there need to be 3 World\/Olympic Championships within 12 months though? Could be a good opportunity for\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1cvl2hr r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fina1908\">@fina1908\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u00a0to try something new within that time frame\u00a0<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"r-4qtqp9 r-dflpy8 r-sjv1od r-zw8f10 r-10akycc r-h9hxbl\" title=\"Man shrugging\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/abs-0.twimg.com\/emoji\/v2\/svg\/1f937-1f3fc-200d-2642-fe0f.svg\" alt=\"Man shrugging\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\" \/>\u201c<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Kazan, Russia,<\/strong> are set to be hosts in 2025 as the event returns to its regular two-year cycle.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-excludes-russian-and-belarussian-athletes-and-officials-from-2022-world-championships\/\">Russia are banned for the foreseeable future<\/a> following the invasion of <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> and it&#8217;s difficult to see them being readmitted to world sport given <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>&#8216;s murderous intent.<\/p>\n<p>Given the circumstances, it would appear preferable for Doha to be switched to 2025 rather than have worlds and Olympics in the space of seven months in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Of whether that would be possible, FINA added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;FINA&#8217;s concerns remain a peaceful resolution to the war and support for the Ukrainian aquatics community for as long as it is needed.<span lang=\"EN-GB\"> It is not able to comment any further at this time.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Furniss said of the close proximity of Doha and Paris:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It would be very difficult, very difficult indeed, if that&#8217;s the case (Doha in January of Olympic year).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s something we would have to sit down with our athletes and coaches and look at.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, I haven&#8217;t made any calls on it and I&#8217;m not ducking the question, but to put a World Championships and Olympics in the same year? It&#8217;s challenging.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So that&#8217;s something we will have to sit down and look at.
