{"id":507604,"date":"2022-06-24T09:09:25","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T16:09:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=507604"},"modified":"2022-06-24T12:41:07","modified_gmt":"2022-06-24T19:41:07","slug":"world-championships-sarah-sjostrom-wins-fourth-straight-title-in-50-fly-henique-zhang-on-podium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-sarah-sjostrom-wins-fourth-straight-title-in-50-fly-henique-zhang-on-podium\/","title":{"rendered":"World Championships: Sarah Sjostrom Wins Fourth Straight Title In 50 Fly; Henique &#038; Zhang On Podium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> won a record fourth consecutive 50 fly title at the <strong>World Championships<\/strong> in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>Sjostrom won gold in 2015, 2017 and 2019 to become the only woman to win three titles in the one-length event.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, she wrote yet another entry into the record books with victory in 24.95 before dashing off for the 50 free semis 15 minutes later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melanie Henique<\/strong> won silver in 25.31 &#8211; 11 years after bronze at Shanghai 2011 &#8211; with <strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong> taking bronze in 25.32 and <strong>Farida Osman<\/strong> of Egypt setting a new African record of 25.38 in fourth.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2022\/19th-fina-world-championships-sw-live-results\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-how-to-watch-swimming-action-plus-key-links\/\">How to Watch &amp; Key Links<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-torri-huske-blasts-american-record-in-50-butterfly-just-behind-sarah-sjostrom-in-semis\/\">Torri Huske Blasts American Record In 50 Butterfly Just Behind Sarah Sjostrom In Semis<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sjostrom won her first world title at Rome 2009 and now stands second only to <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong> in terms of individual medal counts.<\/p>\n<p>The Swede has 18 among a 19-strong total while Phelps finished his career with 20 in an overall tally of 33, including 13 relay medals.<\/p>\n<p>She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It feels unreal that I\u2019ve been able to be at this level for so long. I won my first title (world) title in 2009 \u2013 Michael Phelps was still swimming at that time and I was really looking up to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo,yeah, it feels amazing to still be around and still win the medals and I\u2019ve learned that there\u2019s nothing I can take for granted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very proud of it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sarah-sjostrom-smashes-25-second-barrier-with-world-record-in-50-fly-in-sweden\/\">The nine-time world champion set a world record of 24.43<\/a> at Boras, Sweden, in July 2014, sending ripples across pooldecks around the world.<\/p>\n<p>It was half a second inside the standard held by fellow Swede <strong>Therese Alshammar<\/strong> since 2009 and as perfect as swim as possible.<\/p>\n<p>She recalled:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;That time is ridiculous. Something I\u2019ve learned about swimming is sometimes it doesn\u2019t really matter how hard you train, how well-prepared you are, how strong you feel in the gym or in the pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it matters it\u2019s sometimes just the timing in your stroke and the feeling you have mentally coming up to the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the things that\u2019s going to make the difference when it really matters in the finals.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sjostrom feared for her career in February last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sarah-sjostrom-surprises-self-opens-up-about-injury-fear-after-olympics-opener\/\">when she fell on ice south of Stockholm, Sweden, breaking her elbow in the process<\/a> and being forced to undergo subsequent surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did she manage to recover in time to race in Tokyo but Sjostrom won silver in the 50 free, a miraculous outcome in the circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Those dark days when she feared that all her preparation and planning for the Olympics would come to nought has had an impact on her outlook.<\/p>\n<p>She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I am not taking it for granted anymore that I am going to be on top of the podium and that I am going to race the best swimmers in the world all the time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know it can change very quick so I am trying to enjoy it much more.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She stood back on the blocks, delaying going into the dive position to the final seconds.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s something she has been working on with the likes of <strong>Ben Proud,<\/strong> renowned for his dive, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-ben-proud-explodes-for-50-free-world-title-michael-andrew-claims-silver\/\">and who won the 50 free title in Budapest tonight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sjostrom said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I just felt like I needed to start playing with some new technique with my start because I feel like I\u2019ve been stuck with my technique and you can see I am still quite far behind when it comes to 15m, 20m.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know that\u2019s not when you win the race but I still want to improve that part.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve been looking at other swimmers like Ben Proud \u2013 I have been training with him and I\u2019ve seen he does something similar and some American swimmers stand up before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just felt like I wanted to try it before: I feel very good in training when I do it but I haven\u2019t really figured it out in the race yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever I am able to make it work 100% in a race, I think it\u2019s going to make a difference when I have learned the technique.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Results<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Sarah Sjostrom (SWE); 24.95<\/li>\n<li>Melanie Henique (FRA); 25.31<\/li>\n<li>Zhang Yufei (CHN); 25.32<\/li>\n<li>Farida Osman (EGY); 25.38<\/li>\n<li>Claire Curzan (USA); 25.43<\/li>\n<li>Torri Huske (USA); 25.45<\/li>\n<li>Marie Wattel (FRA); 25.79<\/li>\n<li>Maaike de Waard (NED); 25.85<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sarah Sjostrom won a record fourth consecutive 50 fly title at the World Championships in Budapest.
