FEDERAL WAY, Washington, February 26. THE University of California and Stanford University are tied for the lead with 120 points each in the women\u2019s Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships after each school won one relay and finished second in the other this evening in Federal Way. USC is currently in third with 108 points after taking third in both the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay. Cal\u2019s Pac-12 meet record in the 800 free relay highlighted a quick first night of racing.<\/p>\n

Stanford\u2019s quartet of Felicia Lee (23.67), Katie Olsen (26.83), Nicole Stafford (23.54) and Maddy Schaefer (21.70) took the opening 200 medley relay in commanding fashion, touching in 1:35.74 to outdistance Cal\u2019s Rachel Bootsma (23.76), Yvette Kong (27.94), Cindy Tran (22.68) and Missy Franklin (21.68), who finished in 1:36.06. Southern California\u2019s Kendyl Stewart (24.38), Kasey Carlson (26.57), Jasmine Tosky (23.77) and Katarzyna Wilk (21.82) rounded out the top three in 1:36.54. Stanford\u2019s time ranks second in the country this season and was just .12 off the Pac-12 meet record set by Cal in 2011. Georgia\u2019s 1:35.52 from the SEC Championships last weekend still stands as the fastest time this season.<\/p>\n

In the 800 freestyle relay, California came oh-so-close to breaking the NCAA and American record in the event. Missy Franklin (1:42.89), Rachael Acker (1:43.96), Caroline Piehl (1:43.19) and Elizabeth Pelton (1:43.53) demolished the field with a 6:53.57, just off the NCAA and American record of 6:52.64, set by Georgia\u2019s Shannon Vreeland, Megan Romano, Jordan Mattern and Allison Schmitt last February. They did, however, crush the meet record of 6:56.87, set by Cal\u2019s Dana Vollmer, Madison Kennedy, Lauren Boyle and Hannah Wilson in 2008.<\/p>\n

Georgia actually has the fastest time in that event this season with a 6:53.04 from SECs last weekend. That record will be in serious jeopardy next month when the two schools square off at NCAAs.<\/p>\n

Stanford finished a distant second in the event, with Julia Anderson (1:44.76), Maya DiRado (1:43.28), Maddy Schaefer (1:45.84) and Lia Neal (1:44.35) coming in at 6:58.23, about three-tenths under their previous best this season, a 6:58.57 from the Art Adamson Invitational in the fall. USC finished third again, as Chelsea Chenault (1:44.65), Lynette Lim (1:46.54), Lexie Malazdrewicz (1:46.07) and Jasmine Tosky (1:44.39) hit the wall in 7:01.65.<\/p>\n
