World Championships: Summer McIntosh Secures Top Seed in Prelims of 200 Butterfly; Hali Flickinger Cruises<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Summer McIntosh<\/strong> put her versatility on display when she popped a sub-2:06 performance in the 200-meter butterfly. It was an effort that impressively complemented her world-class talent in the freestyle events and individual medley. Now, McIntosh is chasing the podium in the 200 fly at the World Championships in Budapest.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday morning, the 15-year-old comfortably clocked a time of 2:07.26 to advance to the semifinals as the No. 1 seed. With only 25 entrants, the premier names in the field had the luxury of easing through the preliminaries and conserving energy for the evening session. McIntosh was one of two athletes to dip under 2:08, as she was joined by American Hali Flickinger<\/strong>. The bronze medalist in the 200 fly at last summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Flickinger touched the wall in 2:07.31.<\/p>\n

The gold and silver medalists from the Olympics, China’s Zhang Yufei<\/strong> and the United States’ Regan Smith<\/strong> qualified for the semifinals in sixth and fifth, respectively. Zhang, who has been off form through the early stages of the competition, was timed in 2:09.21, just behind the 2:09.02 of Smith. The American is coming off a gold medal in the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n

Japan’s Kina Hayashi<\/strong> posted the third-fastest time of the morning, going 2:08.63, and was followed by Australian Elizabeth Dekkers<\/strong> and her mark of 2:08.98. It only took 2:11.65 to move on to the semifinals, the 16th-place time registered by Japan’s Chiho<\/strong> Mizuguchi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
