THE Century High School girls and Sunset High School boys earned hard-fought victories last weekend at the Oregon 6A Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center. In the girls\u2019 meet, Century topped the field with 168 points, not far ahead of West Linn (143 points) and Lakeridge (120 points). The race for the boys\u2019 title came down to the final relay, as Sunset held a four-point advantage after the 100 breast and had to win the final relay in order to win the meet. Sunset topped Jesuit, 3:08.16 to 3:11.93, to win the relay and the meet by a slim 10 points, 179-169. Southridge rounded out the top three with 123 points.<\/p>\n<p>On the girls\u2019 side, only four schools recorded individual or relay victories at the meet: Century, West Linn, Centennial and Forest Grove. West Linn\u2019s foursome of Laura Laderoute, Robin Pinger, Kylie Norris and Brianna Dyrdahl picked up a win in the opening event, taking the 200 medley relay in 1:48.13. Laderoute returned in the next event to win the 200 IM in an All-American consideration time of 2:04.40.<\/p>\n<p>Century picked up 64 of its 168 team points from double individual winners Ellie Thornbrue (200 free, 1:50.57; 500 free, 4:56.11) and Sara Metzsch (100 fly, 55.27; 100 back, 54.81). Metszch\u2019s time in the 100 back tied the overall and 6A state record, set by Westview\u2019s Michelle Cefal in 2013. Metzsch, Thornbrue, Hannah Galbraith and Logan Neal teamed up to win the 200 free relay in 1:36.88, just off the overall and 6A state record of 1:36.41. Riley Neal then joined Metzsch, Thornbrue and Neal to win the 400 free relay in 3:29.95, which lowered their own Oregon state and 6A record of 3:31.42 set in prelims.<\/p>\n<p>Centennial freshman Jamie Stone made her high school state debut in terrific fashion, winning the 50 free in 23.10. Later in the meet, she added a second individual win in the 100 free, dipping under 50 seconds with a 49.96, which broke the overall Oregon state record and 6A record of 50.08, set by Roseburg\u2019s Kaylin Bing in 2011. Forest Grove\u2019s Prudence Rooker won the final individual event of the meet, the 100 breast, in 1:03.39, just missing her own 6A record of 1:03.34 from prelims.<\/p>\n<p>On the boys\u2019 side, Sunset kicked off the meet with wins in the first two events. Tristan Furnary, Blake Hulstrom, Jonathan Zoucha and Josh Noll posted the best time in the 200 medley relay at 1:36.34 before Zoucha returned to take the 200 free in an Automatic All-American time of 1:38.72. Later in the meet, Zoucha won his second individual event of the day, touching first in the 100 fly with another Automatic All-American time of 49.28. Tristan Furnary made it back-to-back wins for Sunset with his victory in the 100 free in a time of 46.49. In the 400 free relay, Zoucha, Furnary, Noll and Braden Esping led from start to finish to put their stamp on the relay and the meet with a 10-point win over Jesuit.<\/p>\n<p>Southridge, which finished third in the boys\u2019 team standings, had two individual state championships and one relay win. In the 200 IM, Patrick Mulcare set a new Oregon state and 6A record of 1:49.02, topping Will Gunderson\u2019s 6A record (1:49.88) and Ben Brink\u2019s overall record (1:49.50).\u00a0 In the 100 back, Mulcare lowered his second overall and 6A record of the afternoon with a 48.53, which topped Curtis Klein\u2019s 6A record of 50.08 from 2012 and Trent Staley\u2019s overall record of 50.02 from 2000. The Southridge quartet of Matt Braun, David Stiling, Aaron Loprete and Mulcare posted the fastest 200 free relay of the meet at 1:27.68, just three tenths in front of McMinnville.<\/p>\n<p>Other individual winners included Century\u2019s Liam Metzsch (50 free, 20.96), Westview\u2019s Myron Shen (500 free, 4:41.04) and Sheldon\u2019s Curtis Hubbard (100 breast, 57.79).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/published\/12772.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Results For: Oregon 6A High School Championships<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GRESHAM, Oregon, February 25.
