Ledecky clearly backed off during the last half of the race, but was still able to dip under the 4:00 barrier. It was the perfect way for Ledecky to open her meet and build momentum for the days to come.<\/p>\n<p>Without defending champion and world record holder, Australia\u2019s<b>\u00a0Ariarne Titmus,<\/b> who is sitting out these Championships, Ledecky will be joined in the finals by Tokyo fourth place getter, outstanding 15-year-old Canadian <b>Summer Macintosh<\/b>\u00a0(4:03.19) and Australian pair World Junior champion\u00a0<b>Lani Pallister\u00a0<\/b>(4:03.71) and Tokyo finalist\u00a0<b>Kiah Melverton\u00a0<\/b>(4:03.74).<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky\u2019s US team mate<b>\u00a0Leah Smith,<\/b> third in the 400m behind Ledecky in the 2016 Rio Olympic 400m final, finished in fifth place in the final heat and that\u2019s where she qualified into the final.<\/p>\n<p>Heat three winner, New Zealand Olympic finalist\u00a0<b>Erika Fairweather <\/b>(4:06.00)<b>,<\/b>\u00a0made the final in sixth in 4:06.00 ahead of China\u2019s <strong>Muhan Tang<\/strong> (4:06.29) with Germany\u2019s\u00a0<b>Isabel Gose\u00a0<\/b>(4:06.44) rounding out the top eight.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a
