Challis followed it up by going 1:04.33 in the women\u2019s SB2 50 breaststroke to set the world record.<\/p>\n<p>It was part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishswimming.org\/news\/para-swimming-news\/madeira22-day-1-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a big night for the British delegation<\/a>, which claimed five gold and seven total medals. <strong>Bethany Firth<\/strong> led a 1-2-3 finish for Britain in the women\u2019s S14 200 freestyle, winning in 2:08.72. <strong>Jessica Applegate<\/strong> and <strong>Louise Fiddes<\/strong> rounded out the podium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hannah Russell<\/strong> added a title in the women\u2019s S12 100 backstroke. <strong>Stephen Clegg<\/strong> won the men\u2019s S12 100 back.<\/p>\n<h4>2022 World Para Swimming Championships Links<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/madeira-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Home\/Live Stream<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/madeira-2022\/schedule-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/static\/info\/swch22\/eng\/zz\/ZZM195U_SWCH22@@@@@@@@@ENG.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medal Table<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The big winner on the opening night was Italy, which claimed six goal and 13 total medals. <strong>Alberto Amodeo<\/strong> started it out in a battle in the men\u2019s S8 400 free. He clocked in at 4:27.76, edging American <strong>Matthew Torres<\/strong> by .08 seconds. That time is the American record. Countryman <strong>Robert Griswold<\/strong> took bronze.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stefano Raimondi<\/strong> won the SB9 100 breast, <strong>Francesco Bocciardo<\/strong> claimed the S5 50 free (by .17 seconds over Brazil\u2019s <strong>Samuel Da Silva de Oliveira<\/strong>) and <strong>Efrem Morelli<\/strong> claimed the SB3 50 breast. On the women\u2019s side, Italy added gold medals via <strong>Giulia Ghiretti<\/strong> (in a 1-2 with <strong>Monica Boggioni)<\/strong> in the SB4 100 breast and <strong>Carlotta Gilli<\/strong> in the S13 100 fly. Raimondi also returned to earn bronze in the S10 50 free.<\/p>\n<p>All three American gold medals on Night 1 came on the women\u2019s side. <strong>Morgan Stickney<\/strong> started it by winning the S8 400 free in 4:50.18. <strong>Julia Gaffney<\/strong> claimed the SM7 200 individual medley in 2:55.28. <strong>Leanne Smith<\/strong> capped the night by setting an American record in the SB3 50 breast of 55.25. She needed all of that speed to edge Spain\u2019s <strong>Marta Fernandez Infante<\/strong> by a mere 0.34 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gia Pergolini<\/strong> added a silver in the S13 100 fly for the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s <strong>Shelby Newkirk<\/strong> set a pair of competition records in the women\u2019s S6 100 back, winning the final in a time of 1:20.96.<\/p>\n<p>It was part of a big evening for the Canadian delegation. <strong>Aurelie Rivard<\/strong> finished out the night with a time of 27.5 to claim the S10 women\u2019s 50 free. <strong>Tess Routliffe<\/strong> and <strong>Camille Berube<\/strong> won silver and bronze, respectively, in the SM7 200 IM for Canada, while <strong>Nicholas Bennett<\/strong> earned silver in the men\u2019s S14 200 free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kalia Pelendritou<\/strong> of Cyprus set a championships record of 29.58 in the S11 women\u2019s 50 free in the morning. That time is also a European record. She was slightly slower at night but still won in 29.81.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gabriel Bandiera<\/strong> also set a competition record, the Brazilian winning the men\u2019s S14 200 free in 1:52.42.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lisa Kruger<\/strong> of the Netherlands prevailed in the women\u2019s SB9 100 breast, joined by countryman <strong>Rogier Dorsman<\/strong> claiming the S11 men\u2019s 50 free, edging Lithuanian <strong>Edgaras Matakas<\/strong> by 0.15 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen nations won gold medals on the first night of the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships. <strong>Oleksii Virchenko<\/strong> of Ukraine won the men\u2019s S13 100 fly in 56.10, outtouching France\u2019s <strong>Alex Portal<\/strong> at the wall. Croatia\u2019s <strong>Dino Sinovcic<\/strong> was on top of the field in the men\u2019s S6 100 back. <strong>Amulfo Castorena<\/strong> was the only swimmer under a minute in the SB2 50 breast in 59.55.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carlos Daniel Serrano Zarate<\/strong> of Colombia prevailed in a South American duel in the men\u2019s SM7 200 IM, edging Argentina\u2019s <strong>Inaki Basiloff<\/strong> by 0.65 seconds. Colombians earned silver and bronze in the SB4 men\u2019s 100 breast, behind Greece\u2019s <strong>Antonios Tsapatakis<\/strong> in 1:36.27. <strong>Rowan Crothers<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/para-worlds-australias-rowan-crothers-adds-world-championship-gold-in-the-50m-freestyle-to-tokyo-triumph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of
