﻿{"id":506354,"date":"2022-06-12T00:55:38","date_gmt":"2022-06-12T07:55:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=506354"},"modified":"2022-06-11T14:56:30","modified_gmt":"2022-06-11T21:56:30","slug":"world-championships-arno-kamminga-on-his-sadness-at-adam-peatys-absence-and-the-legacy-of-the-pioneers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-arno-kamminga-on-his-sadness-at-adam-peatys-absence-and-the-legacy-of-the-pioneers\/","title":{"rendered":"World Championships: Arno Kamminga On His Sadness At Adam Peaty&#8217;s Absence And The Legacy Of The Pioneers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Budapest was meant to play host to the renewal of rivalries between <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong>, <strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong> and <strong>Nicolo Martinenghi\u00a0<\/strong>for the first time since the trio occupied the 100m breaststroke podium in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>Peaty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-adam-peaty-defends-100-breaststroke-gold-arno-kamminga-gets-silver\/\">became only the second swimmer to repeat as Olympic champion<\/a> in the two-length event with victory in Tokyo last year, \u00a0joining <strong>Kosuke Kitajima<\/strong> who won the breaststroke double in 2004 and 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Kamminga claimed silver in both the 100 and 200br to become the first man from the Netherlands to win an Olympic medal in the pool since <strong>Pieter van den Hoogenband<\/strong> at <strong>Athens 2004<\/strong> with Martinenghi third to make it an all-European podium.<\/p>\n<p>Just 0.06secs separated the trio\u2019s best times this season, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/arno-kamminga-twice-hits-58-over-100-breaststroke-puts-van-roon-win-sprint-titles-in-eindhoven\/\">Kamminga on 58.52<\/a> ahead of Martinenghi (58.57) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-goes-58-58-to-win-100-breaststroke-at-british-championships-with-paris-in-his-sights\/\">Peaty going 58.58 in only his second meet after Tokyo<\/a> with the Briton instead competing in the BBC&#8217;s &#8216;Strictly Come Dancing&#8217; although there is hope the Briton will recover in time for the Europeans in Rome in August.<\/p>\n<p>Kamminga told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was most of all just sad: I want to race him. Last year I think I made a great race in Tokyo and in Budapest (at the European Championships) as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had quite some fun racing him and I hope he did as well. I just wanted to race him against this year: obviously him coming off the dancing and he hasn\u2019t hit the pool in a long time and me trying to take the next step, it would be a very interesting race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly because of some bad luck we won\u2019t be able to do it this year at worlds.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The 26-year-old, who is coached by <strong>Mark Faber<\/strong> in Amsterdam, was a regular visitor to the international podium in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Double Olympic silver in Tokyo was preceded by three visits to the second step of the rostrum at the <strong>European Championships<\/strong> in May <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-day-2-finals-peaty-takes-fourth-title-in-57-66-tie-for-womens-100-fly\/\">in the 100 and 200m breaststroke<\/a> plus the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-european-championships-britain-lower-european-mixed-medley-record-to-338-82\/\">mixed medley relay<\/a> at the same Duna Arena that hosts this &#8220;extraordinary&#8221; worlds.<\/p>\n<p>There was gold and silver at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fina.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FINA<\/a> World Short-Course Championships which followed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-netherlands-set-wr-in-mixed-4x50-medley-relay\/\">a world record of 1:36.18 in the mixed medley relay<\/a> at the European showcase among four medals.<\/p>\n<p>The tag of favourite has been attached to Kamminga who laughed as he said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI want to have Kamminga as clear favourite even with Peaty but I have to beat him first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to become world champion but I want to race the best in the world and I want to beat them fair and square.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where my passion for the sport is, where my love for the sport is and also my respect for my competitors. I know what you need to do, I know what it takes to get to this level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeaty brought it to another level and has been doing it for so many more years. I think when he stands on the block \u2013 especially the last couple of years \u2013 a lot of people just settled with silver, they knew they couldn\u2019t win. That\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see a change already in the Netherlands: when I grew up everybody wanted to be a freestyler because all the top swimmers were freestylers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had Pieter (van den Hoogenband), we had Inge (de Bruijn), we had Ranomi (Kromowidjojo).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNowadays more and more people want to become a breaststroker or even another stroke and I think that\u2019s just really good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing Adam, seeing me, seeing Zac swimming so fast, it\u2019s good for the sport I think.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously I want to swim the 2:05 and I want to go in that sub 2:06 but he did it first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally good and now I want to just race him: I haven\u2019t raced him since the Olympics and I struggle doing the 200 on my own nowadays.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>On Target For Budapest After Heavy Workload<\/h3>\n<p>Kamminga\u2019s season\u2019s best in the 200 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/arno-kamminga-twice-goes-sub-59-over-100m-breaststroke-in-heidelberg\/\">stands at 2:08.22 from Heidelberg in April<\/a> and he welcomed the opportunity for a spell of intense racing against some of the world\u2019s best including the Japanese delegation at the <strong>Mare Nostrum<\/strong> in May.<\/p>\n<p>His preparation has been more gruelling and involved a lot more work than the last couple of years which were impacted by Covid.<\/p>\n<p>He explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cInstead of one camp we had two camps which definitely killed me: I\u2019ve never been this tired before but I still swam really good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso my times in competition have been so constant and so high even though I was dead before my race and just tired and my race feels really bad execution-wise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the times are still there so that\u2019s quite nice. Now we finally get some rest and each day I feel better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was fun the last couple of months but now it becomes more fun every single day because it just feels
