UCLA's surprising Bruins, without an individual or relay title to their name, continue standing atop the scoreboard at the 2003 Pac-10 Swimming and Diving Championships with one day remaining.

The meet concludes this evening (March 1) at the King County Aquatic Center,

Coach Cyndi Gallagher's Bruins, who won their only title three years ago here, lead with 848.5 points. Defending champ Stanford is a solid second (797 points), while USC is in third with 663 points, despite having he most individual titles (three swimming, two diving and one relay).

Cal remains fourth (656), Arizona is next (623). Arizona State stands sixth (486), Washington is seventh (393.5), Oregon State eighth (338) and Washington State ninth (207).

The Bruins scored a trio of fourth-place individual finishes plus a pair of fourths in both relays (200 medley, 800 free) to bolster their cause. Two of their individual fourths were them by freshman, the other by a sophomore,

Rookie Brooke Winkler was fourth in the 400 IM (seasonal-pr 4:18.04), freshman Kim Vandenberg set a UCLA record with her 53.49 fourth-place finish in the 100 fly (NCAA "A" cut) with teammate Kristen Lewis sixth ("A" cut 54.14); and soph Malin Svahnstrom — bronze medalist in the 200 IM ("A" cut 1:59.85) — was fourth tonight in the 200 free (1:48.56).

The 200 free's winner was something of a surprise in that the gold-medalist was Washington's Kim Harada, scoring the Huskies' first win by a swimmer of either sex in the new century.

Her winning time was a pr and Washington record 1:46.87, which should get her on the plane to Auburn in three weeks for NCAAs Arizona State's Petra Banovic's pr 1:47,89 got her the silver.

There were a pair of outstanding performances turned in by swimmers who already lead the country in their respective events, i.e., Stanford's Tara Kirk in the 100 breast and Cal's Natalie Coughlin in the 100 fly, All Kirk did was stroke her way through the breaststroke in an American/NCAA-record 58.41, breaking her old mark iof 58.68 from last season's Pac-10s at Belmont.

Coughlin, the American/NCAA record-holder in the 100 fly (50.01 from last year's NCAAs at Texas), raced to a 51.10 win, history's fourth-fastest performance (she has the other three). Her time broke the old Pac-10 record of 51.83 by Stanford's 200 fly Olympic gold-medalist Misty Hyman four years ago,

*    *     *     *       *

Stanford opened the competition with its record-breaking 200 medley relay victory, as the team of Amy Wagner, Tara Kirk, sister Dana Kirk and Sarah Jones won in a Pac-10 Championship record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:38.80. California, last year's 200 medley relay champions, finished runner-up, touching in an NCAA "B" 1:40.53.

USC next scored a 1-2 finish in the 400 individual medley, as Kaitlin Sandeno — 500 free champ opening night and a threat to Auburn's defending NCAA champ Maggie Bowen –won in 4:09.14, third-fastest nationally. Her time also eclipsed her old pr of 4:09.54 from the Speedo Championships at Belmont Plaza two years ago when she was still in high school in Orange County.

Her Trojan teammate Michala Kwasny, 200 IM champ and defending Pac-10 400 IM champ, earned the runner-up spot, touching the wall second in 4:10.76. Stanford's Kristen Caverly rounded out the top three places, finishing third in 4:11.89. All three finishers were under the NCAA 'A' cuts.

Now it was Coughlin time and the Cal junior didn't disappoint, setting her second conference record of the championship with a 51.10 100 fly. She had gone a record 22.05 50 free Thursday. The win was her eighth career Pac-10 title and eighth Pac-10 record too, a feat unmatched in the history of the meet. Coughlin is a two-time NCAA Swimmer of the Year and finalist for the 2003 AAU Sullivan Award,

In the race, the top six finishers each recorded NCAA automatic qualifying times (54.24). USC's Jana Krohn finished second in 52.97, while Stanford's Dana Kirk was third in 53.32.

Washington's Harada was a force in the 200 free, winning the race and recording the only NCAA 'A' time (1:46.87). Arizona State's Petra Banovic and Arizona's Jessica Hayes finished second and third in "B" cuts.

Stanford's Tara Kirk next broke her own American/NCAA and Pac-10 record in the 100 breast with her remarkable 58.41. ASU's Agnes Kovacs placed second with a 1:00.88 and Arizona's Jessica Wagner captured third in 1:01.94.

Cal senior Staciana Stitts — who's already made the "A" cut earlier this season in both breaststroke events — placed fifth in 1:02.47.

The 100 back was another impressive race as the top six finishers all recorded NCAA automatic qualifying times. Arizona Wildcat senior Beth Botsford, Atlanta Olympic 100 back gold medalist, was the fastest in the field with her winning 53.21. Stanford's Amy Wagner placed second with a 54.09 while Arizona's Jenna Gresdal posted a 54.67 for third. Cal freshman Helen Silver swam her first 'A' time of the season in the 100 back, finishing fifth with a seasonal- and career-best 54.85.

The Trojans' 2002 NCAA Diver of the Year, Blythe Hartley, won her second title of the championships by taking the top spot in the three-meter competition with 606.20 points. Teammate Nicci Fusaro placed second with 516.60 points, while Stanford's Ashlee Rosenthal placed third with 507.35 points.

USC continued its winning ways in the 800 freestyle relay, as the squad of Krohn, Margie Pedder, Kwasny and Sandeno won in 7:12.49. Arizona's team of Katie Willis, Jessica Hayes, Smith and Gresdal finished second with its 7:16.58 and ASU's team of Banovic, Szigeti, Sandra Steffensen and Kari Wilcox finished the top three scoring teams, completing the event in 7:17.96.

The men's diving championship is also held this weekend. In today's action, ASU captured the first and second places in the one-meter event as freshman Joona Puhakka was victorious with a 385.75 point total. Sun Devil teammate, Thomas McCrummen finished second (314.85), while Cal senior Nic Bartolotta finished third with 289.85 points. Puhakka won the 3-meter yesterday.

SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
FEBRUARY 27-MARCH 1, 2003
FEDERAL WAY, WA (WEYERHAEUSER KING COUNTY AQUATICS CENTER)

FEBRUARY 28, 2003

TEAM SCORES – AFTER 14 OF 21 EVENTS
1.
