IT ain't over 'till it's over, of course, but from the looks of things nobody's gonna hold these Tigers.

Coach Susan Teeter's Princeton Lady Tiger swimming and diving team, treble-defending Ivy League champs, are poised to make it a clean-sweep of the new century's titles based on results of Day 2's Ivy League Championships.

Princeton built on its sub 50-point lead from opening night with wins in five of eight events this evening, opening up a rather sizeable 541.5 – 402 margin over arch-rival Harvard. Brown, which was in second after Day 1, has slipped to third (386.5) with Yale fourth (342), followed by Columbia (263), Penn (258), Dartmouth (152) and Cornell (128).

The Tigers were off to a roaring start in the first event, the 200 medley relay, setting a meet record of 1:42.55 en route to the gold. Brown gave chase and 50 free champ Liz Daniels (pr 22.75) anchored the Bears in a sizzling 22.01 — by far the fastest split of the race — but it wasn't enough as the Providencers were No. 2 in 1:43.57. The old record also belonged to Princeton, 1:42.68 from last season.

NCAA "B" cut is 1:43.47.

Then came the swim of the meet by (who else?) Princeton's Sarah Fraumann, a distance specialist who won the 1000 free in a meet record 9:53.52. The old standard was a 10:00.63 by Tiger Valeria Kukla from last year, so the winner knocked a cool seven seconds off that mark. Penn's Kathleen Holthaus was second (10:00.27) as the Quakers recorded their highest finish.

Yale stopped the Tiger win streak when senior Susan Cooke won the 400 IM in 4:20.20, within the "B" cut of 4:22.77. Harvard frosh Jane Evans was a close second (4:20.46) with Tiger Whitney Ryan taking the bronze (4:21.67).

Princeton senior Molly Seto, sister of former Tiger Ivy breaststroke champ Carwei, defended her 100 fly title with a 55.24 win and teammate Kitsie Kerner (55.59 with a pr 55.35 in the heats) was sescond. The"B" cut is 55.76.

(It should be noted that a swimmer must have at least one "A" cut for entry into the DI Championships, and "B" standards are used only after all the "A" slots have been filled.)

The Elis won their second gold when junior Paige Harizan out-touched Tiger Amy Jones to win the 200 free, 1:49.42-1:49.53, the only sub 1:50.0s of the race. Jones was top qualifier with her 1:50.33.

Princeton's final individual title came when sophomore breaststroker Stephanie Hsiao broke the decade-old meet-record n the 100 with her pr 1:02.43. The old Ivy meet-record was a 1:03.13 by the aforesaid Carwei Seto from the 1993 championships, and the ex-Tiger also still holds the pool record with her 1:02.34 from a year earlier.

Hsiao was followed by Harvard's Erica deBenedetto (1:03.99). The winner's time missed the "A" cut of 1:02.07 but is well within the"B" standard of 1:03.92.

Brown's Daniels scored her third gold (she anchored the Bears' winning 200 free relay) when she topped the filed in the 100 backstroke, winning in 56.11. Teammate Jessica Brown made it a sweep with her runner-up 56.31. Princeton's Nielson (56.51) was third.

With 200 freea second-placer Jones leading off the 800 free relay in 1:50.43, fastest split of the race, Princeton swept to the win in 7:23.82, just off its meet- and pool-record 7:23.26 from two seasons ago.

— Bill Bell

WOMEN'S IVY LEAGUE SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

DENUZIO POOL, PRINCETON, NJ
FEB. 28, 2003

25 YD.
