{"id":506001,"date":"2022-06-01T13:30:30","date_gmt":"2022-06-01T20:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=506001"},"modified":"2022-06-01T13:30:30","modified_gmt":"2022-06-01T20:30:30","slug":"amid-allegations-comments-from-teri-mckeever-on-2020-appearance-on-champions-mojo-podcast-ring-hollow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/amid-allegations-comments-from-teri-mckeever-on-2020-appearance-on-champions-mojo-podcast-ring-hollow\/","title":{"rendered":"Amid Allegations, Comments From Teri McKeever On 2020 Appearance on Champion&#8217;s Mojo Podcast Ring Hollow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Amid Allegations, Comments From Teri McKeever On 2020 Appearance on Champion&#8217;s Mojo Podcast Ring Hollow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The world of swimming was rocked last week by a thorough investigation into the culture created by <strong>Teri McKeever<\/strong> at the University of California.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2022\/05\/24\/cal-swimmers-allege-coach-teri-mckeever-bullied-and-verbally-abused-them-for-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in-depth investigation by Southern California News Group<\/a> found disturbing revelations about bullying and verbal abuse by the Cal coach in her nearly 30 years in Berkeley. Interviews with more than 20 swimmers and parents, plus more coming forward after the publication of the initial report, revealed a culture of favoritism, mental anguish meted out by McKeever leading to several women contemplating or attempting suicide and rampant transfers out of the Golden Bears.<\/p>\n<p>It led the university to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/report-teri-mckeever-amid-abuse-allegations-placed-on-administrative-leave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">place McKeever on administrative leave last week<\/a>. The ordeal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/at-what-cost-the-details-of-teri-mckeever-saga-are-chilling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calls into question the price of McKeever\u2019s success<\/a> on the pool deck, which led to four NCAA championships, 26 Olympians mentored and McKeever becoming USA Swimming\u2019s head coach of the 2012 Olympic team.<\/p>\n<p>It also casts a different light on the interview McKeever sat down for in 2020 with the Champion\u2019s Mojo podcast, with hosts <strong>Kelly Palace<\/strong> and <strong>Maria Parker.<\/strong> McKeever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.championsmojo.com\/episodepage\/terimckeever79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoke at length about the team\u2019s culture<\/a>, which <strong>Natalie Coughlin<\/strong> and <strong>Missy Franklin<\/strong> had praised, as one where, \u201cthere\u2019s a huge amount of accountability.\u201d It\u2019s easy to see in retrospect how warped that sense of accountability became, as the SCNJ investigation points to McKeever being the sole arbiter of the standards to which swimmers were held.<\/p>\n<p>One comment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.championsmojo.com\/episodepage\/terimckeever151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from an excerpt published last week<\/a> in particular sounds gallingly hollow:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I know as a young coach, I really worried about, OK, how do I have the perfect team meeting? How do I have the perfect message? When\u2019s the perfect time to say it? What I\u2019ve really evolved into is that there is no perfect time to say it, there is not perfect message. You\u2019re going to mess it up. I\u2019m going to say something stupid. I\u2019m going to misinterpret something. But if the people on my team and the people I\u2019m working with know the intent behind my comment is to help them be their best, I am very clear on what our team goals are as a program, but I think you have to be clear on what the individual athletes\u2019 goals are and then my job is to hold them to that, and if there\u2019s a consistent behavior that is contrary to that, I\u2019m going to ask them and I\u2019m going to check in, \u2018are these still your goals?\u2019 And if they are, xyz needs to change. Either you need to change xyz or you need to readjust your goals. You don\u2019t get to say, \u2018I want to be an Olympian,\u2019 and then miss practice three times a week.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s even more glaring considering the interview was conducted in the fall of 2020, per the SCNJ report, and what one unidentified swimmer endured: \u201cMcKeever continued to bully her through the fall and early winter of 2020 despite the coach being aware that she was in therapy\u201d to the point of planning a suicide attempt.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the interview, McKeever haltingly describes the give and take within her program, from the viewpoint of what has proven to be an unreliable narrator:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>You can\u2019t have it both ways. That\u2019s not always comfortable, and I don\u2019t always say it in a way that\u2019s warm and fuzzy \u2013 I\u2019ll be the first one to admit that \u2013 but hopefully people know that it\u2019s really coming from a place of wanting to do, if you\u2019re going to tell me that\u2019s your goal, then I\u2019m all in on that goal and I have to be honest and up front if I think you and I aren\u2019t moving in the direction of attaining that goal.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A final passage seems fitting for what McKeever may face moving forward, while illustrating the delusion as to what was occurring under her watch. \u201cYour actions, your behavior needs to match what you say you need to do,\u201d she said, \u201cand we\u2019re going to hold you to that standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*************************<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Champion\u2019s Mojo earned the 2022 Communicator Award of Distinction for Individual Episode for Causes and Awareness.
