THE SMU men's and Oakland University women's swimming & diving team took the lead at the NIC Championships Thursday at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.

The Mustang men lead with a total of 276 points, with Hawaii trailing with 212. Host Oakland moved to third with 175 points total. Oakland leads the women's competition.

On Day One, host Oakland won both women's relays and one of the two men's relay events. The Golden Grizzlies stroked to victory in the women's 200 medley (NCAA B time of 1:43.43) and 800 free relay (7:26.57).

On the men's side, Oakland picked up another first, taking the 200 medley in an NCAA B cut 1:28.19, but it was Hawaii taking the 800 free relay in 6:30.49, another B time.

Day Two saw the Grizzlies win four of five women's events, while the men's winners were distributed more widely.

Junior Angela Simetkosky led a 1-2-3 Oakland sweep of the women's 500 with her 4:56.86. Danielle ward, who led the first 300 yards was half a second back.

Line Jensen had an easy time of it in the 200 IM, winning in an NCAA B time of 2:02.38. Her teammate, Oksana Strelets posted another B time, 23.39, to win the 50 free.

Oakland finished the evening with a pool, school and meet record 1:32.62 to take the 200 free relay. The time is an NCAA B time.

The only event the Lady Grizzlies did not win was the 1-m dive, which went to Northern Arizona's Kate Anderson.

The men's events saw some truly outstanding swimming. Hawaii's Cheyne Bloch blasted to an NCAA A time in winning the 200 IM in a school record 1:46.43, just 3-hundredths off the pool and meet mark. Teammate Tudor Ignat was second with a B-qualifying 1:49.05, one-hundredth ahead of Oakland's Scott Dickers.

Oakland's Chris Sullivan set a pool, meet and school mark of 19.67 — an A time — to win the 50 free. SMU's Jon Newton was right behind in 19.78, just missing the A cut of 19.74.

SMU senior Brice Dumais successfully defended his NIC three-meter crown with a score of 580.45 in the event, narrowly missing the meet and pool record of 588.00 he set one year ago.

The 500 free fell to Hawaii freshman Andrew Afflack in 4:23.95, a B time.

SMU and Oakland tied for first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:19.71. Oakland's Sullivan led off in 19.63, lowering his minutes-old mark of 19.67. For his part, Newton posted the fastest internal split, 19.17.

The championships continue Friday with a full slate scheduled.

NIC – 2/26/2003 to 3/1/2003
RESULTS

Event 1 Women 200 Yard Medley Relay
===============================================================================
NIC: N 1:43.43  2/26/2003 Oakland University, Oakland-
O Strelets, L Jensen, T Korniyenko, D Ward
Pool Record: P 1:43.43 2/26/2003 Oakland University, Oakland-
O Strelets, L Jensen, T Korniyenko, D Ward
1:40.46  A
1:43.47  B
School                                         Seed     Finals       Points
===============================================================================
1 Oakland University  'A'
