{"id":505852,"date":"2022-05-28T22:11:25","date_gmt":"2022-05-29T05:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=505852"},"modified":"2024-05-05T13:24:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-05T20:24:10","slug":"olympians-katie-grimes-michael-brinegar-leads-u-s-delegation-to-open-water-worlds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympians-katie-grimes-michael-brinegar-leads-u-s-delegation-to-open-water-worlds\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympians Katie Grimes, Michael Brinegar Lead U.S. Delegation to Open Water Worlds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Olympians Katie Grimes, Michael Brinegar Leads U.S. Delegation to Open Water Worlds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Olympians <strong>Michael Brinegar<\/strong> and <strong>Katie Grimes<\/strong> lead a nine-strong Team USA to the World Open Water Championships this summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/news\/2022\/05\/28\/usa-swimming-names-nine-open-water-swimmers-to-fina-world-championships-roster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as announced by USA Swimming on Saturday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Worlds includes not just the 10-kilometer distance, which is the lone Olympic open water race, but five-kilometer and 25-km races.<\/p>\n<p>The team includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Michael Brinegar (Columbus, Ind.\/Mission Viejo Nadadores) \u2013 men\u2019s 25K<\/li>\n<li>Brennan Gravley (Las Vegas, Nev.\/Sandpipers of Nevada\/University of Florida) \u2013 men\u2019s 5K, 10K<\/li>\n<li>Dylan Gravley (Las Vegas, Nev.\/Sandpipers of Nevada\/Arizona State University) \u2013 men\u2019s 10K<\/li>\n<li>Joey Tepper (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.\/University of Tennessee) \u2013 men\u2019s 5K, 25K<\/li>\n<li>Anna Auld (West Palm Beach, Fla.\/University of Florida) \u2013 women\u2019s 5K, 25K<\/li>\n<li>Mariah Denigan (Walton, Ky.\/Indiana University) \u2013 women\u2019s10K<\/li>\n<li>Katie Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev.\/Sandpipers of Nevada) \u2013 women\u2019s 10K<\/li>\n<li>Kensey McMahon (Jacksonville, Fla.\/University of Alabama) \u2013 women\u2019s 25K<\/li>\n<li>Summer Smith (Agawam, Mass.\/Bluefish Swim Club) \u2013 women\u2019s 5K<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both Brinegar and Grimes swam the 800 freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics last year. Grimes finished fourth in the Olympic final; Brinegar missed out on the top eight, finishing 17th in prelims.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifiers for worlds were based on a points system, factoring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-grimes-frenchman-axel-reymond-win-10k-titles-at-open-water-nationals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in April\u2019s U.S. Open Water Nationals<\/a> and the FINA Marathon Swim World Series in Portugal this weekend. Grimes finished eighth in the women\u2019s event there, while Tepper was the top American in ninth.<\/p>\n<p>Brinegar and Brennan Gravley won bronze in the team event at the 2019 World Championships. The other seven will be making their Worlds debut for open water. Grimes is also on the roster for the pool events in Budapest, having qualified for the 400 individual medley and 1,500 freestyle.
