{"id":505589,"date":"2022-05-21T03:26:33","date_gmt":"2022-05-21T10:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=505589"},"modified":"2022-05-21T07:00:02","modified_gmt":"2022-05-21T14:00:02","slug":"kathleen-dawson-ruled-out-of-world-championships-and-commonwealth-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kathleen-dawson-ruled-out-of-world-championships-and-commonwealth-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Kathleen Dawson Ruled Out Of World Championships And Commonwealth Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Olympic mixed medley relay champion <strong>Kathleen Dawson<\/strong> has been ruled out of the <strong>World Championships<\/strong> and <strong>Commonwealth Games<\/strong> with a back injury.<\/p>\n<p>Dawson sustained the injury following the <strong>European Championships<\/strong> in Budapest where she won three golds among an overall medal haul of four.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>University of Stirling<\/strong> swimmer produced one of the performances of the meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-european-championships-kathleen-dawson-wins-gold-again-in-100-back-re-swim\/\">when she won the 100 backstroke in a re-swim<\/a> after the first race &#8211; in which she was to represent <strong>Team Scotland<\/strong> &#8211; and competed at last month&#8217;s British Championships.<\/p>\n<p>However, she has now accepted that she will not be in either Budapest or Birmingham and it is highly unlikely she will return for the <strong>European Championships<\/strong> in Rome in August.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Dawson will undergo an rehab programme rather than surgery and will remain part of Team Scotland in a mentoring role.<\/p>\n<p>Dawson said through <strong>Scottish Swimming<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019m incredibly disappointed not to be competing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this summer. I love representing Team Scotland and had really hoped to be competing, but my back needs rest and I know this is the right decision for me in the long term.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">It is another blow for Britain in terms of the World Championships with Dawson joining fellow Olympic champion <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> on the sidelines.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-ruled-out-of-world-championships-in-budapest-with-foot-injury\/\">Peaty fractured his foot at a training camp in Tenerife<\/a>, ruling him out of Budapest although he is still hoping to be a part of Team England at the Commonwealths with the Europeans following soon after.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Olympic mixed medley relay champion Kathleen Dawson has been ruled out of the World Championships and Commonwealth Games with a back injury.
