{"id":505581,"date":"2022-05-20T17:45:38","date_gmt":"2022-05-21T00:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=505581"},"modified":"2022-05-20T18:26:21","modified_gmt":"2022-05-21T01:26:21","slug":"patrick-callan-to-compete-for-national-champion-cal-bears-in-fifth-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/patrick-callan-to-compete-for-national-champion-cal-bears-in-fifth-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Patrick Callan to Compete for National Champion Cal Bears in Fifth Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Patrick Callan to Compete for National Champion Cal Bears in Fifth Year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A member of last year&#8217;s U.S. Olympic team will have a new collegiate home next fall.\u00a0<strong>Patrick Callan<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kieran-smith-doubles-up-with-200-free-win-leads-haas-kibler-seliskar-in-4x200-free-relay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finished an unexpected sixth in the men&#8217;s 200 freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials last year to qualify for Tokyo<\/a>, where he swam the third leg for the U.S. men&#8217;s 800 free relay in prelims. However, following Tokyo, Callan struggled during his senior season at the University of Michigan, but he has indicated he will compete for a fifth year in college swimming in a new home.<\/p>\n<p>Callan updated his Instagram bio to tag the Cal men&#8217;s swimming program, indicating that the middle-distance standout will be transferring to Cal and joining with head coach <strong>Dave Durden<\/strong> and co. as the Golden Bears tries to defend the NCAA title they won this March. Cal won this year&#8217;s title behind with fifth-year swimmers <strong>Trenton Julian<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Bryce Mefford<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Daniel Carr<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Sean Grieshop<\/strong> serving as major contributors. Callan will attempt to perform similarly well in the extra season allowed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
