I Men: Cavs Take the Lead on Day One of ACC Champs

CHAPEL HILL, NC, February 27. WHO can stop the Cavs?

That's the question fans, coaches and swimmers alike pondered this evening after Coach Mark Barnardino's University of Virginia Cavalier men's siwmming and diving team, quadruple-defending Atlantic Coast Conference champs, raced into the lead after the opening day of competition at the 42nd league championships here tonight.

The meet is underway through Saturday at the Tar Heels' Maurice J. Koury Natatorium, site of last weekend's ACC women's championships, which the Cavs won to dethrone triple-defending champ UNC.

Virginia's men stand in first-place with 246 points. The Cavaliers won four of six events, including all three individual swimming events, to grab the early lead.

Florida State is second with 206 points, North Carolina third (145) with Georgia Tech right behind (141 points). North Carolina State is fifth (108), followed by Clemson (106), Maryland (72) and Duke (55).

In the meet-opening 200 free relay, the Cavaliers placed second to Florida State. The Seminoles clocked a winning 1:19.96 to UVA's 1:20.12, with both teams making the NCAA "B" cut of 1:20.82. The 'Noles missed their meet record of 1:18.78 by a bit more than a second-plus, but then that team had such stalwarts as ACC 50 free record-holder Brendan Dedekind (19.14) and Ecuadorian Olympian Julio Santos.

Virginia junior Luke Anderson, who's the Cav 50 free record-holder with his 19.68 leading off this relay last season, had the fastest leadoff leg (19.90). FSU juniorr Michael Paulus had the fastest overall split, clocking 19.60 for the third leg.

Virginia freshman Fran Crippen — younger brother of Sydney Olympian Maddie, now a senior at Villanova — splashed to the meet's first individual gold by winning the 500 freestyle in an NCAA auto cut of 4:18.20. He was chased home by Georgia Tech senior Shilo Ayalon, an Israeli Olympian, who went a pr and Tech record 4:19.31, also bettering the "A" cut.

Crippen's victory also marked the seventh-consecutive year a Virginia swimmer has won the 500 free but it stopped the two-year reign of junior Ian Prichard, who finished fourth (4:20.89). UVA also took a sixth and an eighth in the race, scoring four men in the finals.

Sophomore Chris (Bo) Greenwood followed Crippen with a win in the 200 IM (1:47.82), marking his second-consecutive victory here. He won last season with a Cav- and ACC-record 1:46.20. Greenwood's time missed the "A" cut (1:46.71) but is well within the "B" standard of 1:49.91.

Cav senior Guy Yimsomruay, a member of the Thai national team, was runner-up in 1:48.42, while UVA rookie Ryan Berg was fourth (1:48.96).

Interestingly, both Crippen and Yimsomnruay are products of Coach Richard Shoulberg's Germantown Academy program and Crippen is national independent school record-holder in the 500 free.

Anderson, 2002 ACC Swimmer of the Year, won the 50 freestyle for the second year in a row, touching in a seasonal-pr and "B" cut 19.84. Teammate Adam Kerpelman ,also a junior, finished second (20.12). The "B" cut is 20.33.

In the three-meter diving competition, Florida State's Louis Gagnet was the winner with a 333.65 total, followed by Clemson's Eric Shulick (315.05). Cav freshman Andrew Barber was his team's top finisher, placing 12th.

Virginia concluded the opening day of competition by winning the 400 medley relay with its 3:14.31, another "B" cut. Luke Wagner led off with a 48.85 backstroke split, second-quickest behind Georgia Tech's Jeremy Raines' pr and Tech record 48.72. Wagner's pr, 48.08 leading off the 400 medley relay at last sason's ACCs, is also the Cav record. The ACC standard is a 47.72 by former Florida State All-America Stephan Parry, a British Olympian and one-time U.S. Nationals 200 meter fly champ (Federal Way, spring 2000).

The meet resumes today (Feb. 28) with prelims at 11 AM and finals at 7 PM, EST.

2003 MEN'S ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

MAURICE J.
