BUOYED by a one-two sweep of the 500 free plus finaling three in the 200 IM and runner-up finishes in both relays, Princeton has a 222.5 – 183.5 advantage over Brown after Day 1 of the women's Ivy League Championships at its home DeNuzio Pool.

Following the top two are Yale (162), Harvard (close behind with 159), Columbia (137), Pennsylvania (104), Dartmouth (74) and Cornell (50).

Coach Susan Teeter's Lady Tigers, ranked 25th nationally and triple-defending league champions, opened defense of their title by pushing Brown to a meet record in the 200 free relay. The Bears clocked 1:32.27, breaking their own record of 1:32.34 from last season, while the Tigers were second in 1:33.79 — .03 off the NCAA "B" cut.

Brown sprinter Liz Daniels, who would be heard from in a big way a bit later on, led off for the Bears in 22.88, fastest leadoff leg. Freshman teammate Michelle Oeser's second leg of 22.73 was not only the Bears' fastest split but quickest of the race too.

Princeton then put the hammer down bigtime in the opening individual race, the 500 free, taking the top two spots plus places five-six in the big final.

Junior Sarah Frauman went a pr and "B' standard 4:49.07 for the gold with freshman teammate Libby Engelmeier next (4:54.84). Tiger Amy Jones (4:56.13, with a 4:55.73 in the prelims) plus Nicole Somers (4:57 .39) completed the Princeton scoring foursome.

Brown was shut out of the finals although junior Jean Lee won the consols in 4:58.24.

Yale senior Susan Cooke made her final appearance for the Elis a successful one as she stroked to gold in the 200 IM ("B" cut 2:03.12) with a pr 2:02.59 in the heats — the day's fastest time.

Tiger sophomore Stephanie Hsiao was next ("B" cut 2:03.29) while teamamtes Whitney Ryan (fifth, 2:04.65) and Chrissy Holland (seventh, 2:05.96) added more points on the board for the orange and black.

Brown's highest (and only) finalist was junior Lindsay Hoban, who clocked 2:04.60 for fourth. As in the 500, a Brown Bear won the consols, in this instance soph Alexis Skoda (2:05.26).

The ladies from Providence scored their first individual victory of the meet when sprinter Daniels went a pr 22.75 to win the 50 going away. Columbia's Jessica Braun was next (23.17). Daniels' time is an NCAA "A" cut and broke the pool record of 22.82 by Yale's Meredith Bryarly from two seasons ago.

(Bryarly, incidentally, has been training in Southern California with Coach Dave Salo's powerhouse Irvine NOVA club.)

The meet record is 22.58 by Brown's Jennifer Boyd from the championships 13 years ago. A month later, Boyd set the current Ivy standard of 22.39 at NCAAs in Austin — site of next month's NCAA Division 1 men's championship.

Yale swept the 1-meter diving event as soph Melanie Loftus scored 265.50 to teammate Kathleen McKeon's 238.10. Princeton's Kristy Wilson was sixth and Brown had no finalists.

But the Bears more than made up for their dearth of diving points with a 3:46.47 – 3:46.80 win over the Tigers in the concluding 400 medley relay. Harvard (3:47.34) won the bronze medal.

— Bill Bell

2003 WOMEN'S IVY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS
DENUZIO POOL, PRINCETON, NJ
DAY ONE: FEB. 27, 2003
25 YD.
