The pressure of expectations \u2013 his own high hopes and the external ones lumped upon him \u2013weighed heavily upon the American sprinter.<\/p>\n<p>The five-time gold medalist in Tokyo opened up this week about those struggles in <a href=\"https:\/\/grahambensinger.com\/2022\/04\/27\/caeleb-dressel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an interview with In Depth with Graham Bensinger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8f-ERpn8UlY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Bensinger spent two days in Gainesville, Fla., with Dressel, his family and coach <strong>Gregg Troy<\/strong>. Dressel shared excerpts from the training journal he kept in the leadup to the Games.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Yep. That&#8217;s May 6th. Oh, so that&#8217;s like a month out from Trials. Yeah, \u2018F**k me, f**king terrible. My body is done.\u2019 Oh jeez\u2026 I know I&#8217;m laughing a little bit, but when you&#8217;re writing this, this isn&#8217;t as a joke. This is good information. \u2018F**k me. F**k my body. F**k swimming.\u2019 Jeez. Yeah there&#8217;s a totally different side of the sport that a lot of people don&#8217;t see\u2026 I try to be as honest with myself as I can in these books &#8217;cause these aren&#8217;t for \u2013 well until now \u2013 these aren&#8217;t really for anybody else&#8217;s eyes.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dressel also discussed a bout with panic attacks as a high school senior, as he was growing into the national swimming spotlight. He also detailed how he took to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?t=85&amp;v=OW1-Im10YIY&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">purging his lifestyle of any extra objects<\/a> \u2013 \u201cclothes, coffee mugs, suits, goggles\u201d \u2013 to achieve a minimalistic existence in the weeks before Trials.<\/p>\n<p>Dressel has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/even-in-latest-star-turn-caeleb-dressel-not-afraid-to-show-vulnerability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not shied away from being publicly vulnerable in the past<\/a>. He\u2019s detailed the toll Tokyo took on him. In the interview with Bensinger, he mentioned that he did not hit many of his goal times in Tokyo while simultaneously calling himself out for being unfair on himself. (Dressel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-caeleb-dressel-set-world-record-in-100-fly-to-win-gold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set a world record in the men\u2019s 100 fly<\/a> in Tokyo plus Olympic records in the 50 and 100 free.)
