THE 2003 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Swimming and Diving Championship began with a bang as the No. 5 SMU women&#39;s swimming &#038; diving set new WAC Championship records in the 200-yard medley and the 800-yard freestyle relays. <\/p>\n<p>The Mustangs, looking for their seventh consecutive WAC title, set the 200 medley record with a time of 1:40.13, breaking its 1999 record of 1:40.67. In the 800 freestyle relay SMU set both the WAC and meet records with a time of 7:07.13. <\/p>\n<p>The SMU team of Alenka Kejzar, Corrie Clark, Georgina Lee and Laura Pomeroy set the automatic qualifying time in the first race of the meet, giving SMU 40 points. Nevada finished second, touching the pad with a time of 1:43.70, followed by Hawai&#39;i with a time of 1:43.86. Rice finished fourth, followed by Fresno State and San Jose State, respectively. <\/p>\n<p>In the final race of day one, the SMU team of Georgina Lee, Lisa Wanberg, Marizanne Grundlingh and Lotta Wanberg gave the Mustangs their second win in as many events. Lee swam a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:45.96 for the 200-yard freestyle in the leadoff leg of the relay. Once again, Nevada finished in second with a time of 7:28.12, bettering its season-best by over 14 seconds. Just as in the first race, Hawai&#39;i finished third, followed by Rice, Fresno State and San Jose State. <\/p>\n<p>After one day of competition, SMU leads with 80 points with Nevada in second with 68. Hawai&#39;i is currently in third place with 64 points, followed by Rice with 60 points. Fresno State stands in fifth place with 56 points, while San Jose State stands in sixth with 52. <\/p>\n<p>Action continues tomorrow at Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas at 11:00 a.m. with the preliminaries and at 6:30 p.m. for the finals of the 500-yard freestyle. <\/p>\n<p>Team Scores<br \/>\n1.
