AUSTIN, Texas, February 23. BY a single point, Carroll High School was denied a sweep of the championships titles at the Texas High School Division 5A Swimming and Diving Championships. The Dragons easily captured the boys team title with 192 points; the Westlake Roadrunners outpointed Carroll 160-159 to snatch the girls banner away from the Dragons.<\/p>\n

Girls<\/strong>
\nA total of 14 points separated the top five girls teams in the scoring race. After Westlake and Carroll’s one-point margin, a tight battle for third through fifth places emerged. Kingwood took third with 148 points, nipping Keller (147) and Keller Central (146).<\/p>\n

Freshman Victoria Edwards gave Westlake 20 points with her victory in the 100 fly (53.99), and came up just short of a second win in the 100 back, posting a 54.61 to Keller senior Laura Norman (54.44). Norman, who will enter Texas A&M in the fall, claimed a second title in the 200 IM (2:01.73).<\/p>\n

Edwards also swam on Westlake’s winning 200 medley relay (1:45.24), with senior Alyssa Woltemath and classmates Catriona MacGregor and Maggie Taylor. <\/p>\n

Lexie Luptor, a Kingwood junior, also was a double-event champion with her 23.02 in the 50 free and 50.23 in the 100 free. <\/p>\n

Seven Lakes senior Lindsay Shabet and Marian Yurchishin, a junior at Health Care, both clocked 1:03.82 in the 100 breast. Shabet will swim for Texas A&M next year.<\/p>\n

Alexandra Buscher, a junior at Houston Memorial, topped the field in the 200 free with her 1:47.78. Sammie Hashbarger, who finished third in the 200 free (1:48.26), came back to claim the 500 free title in 4:50.34. She will be attending Texas this fall.<\/p>\n

Cypress Fairbanks’ Ashlynn Peters, a junior, was the diving champion with 503.65 points.<\/p>\n

Atascocota’s quartet of Jordan Wheeler (sophmore), Bethany Petersen (freshman), Sarah Wehrmeister (sophomore) and Britney Bent (senior) dueled with Keller’s squad of Laura Norman (senior), Sophia Frohberg (sophomore), Audrey McMurry (freshman) and Megna Hanson (freshman) to a 1:36.14-1:36.17 finish in the 200 free relay. Carroll capped off the meet with a 3:28.61 with the team of junior Casey Rose and seniors Rebecca Upton, Alexa Baran and Emily Gibson.<\/p>\n

Boys<\/strong>
\nThe Carroll Dragons took home the title with 192 points, comfortably ahead of Brandeis (157), Klein (139), Plano (130) and College Park (113).<\/p>\n

The Dragons were led by senior Jonathan Roberts, who will join the Texas Longhorns this fall.. Roberts set the only state record of the meet with his 4:16.90 in the 500 free and also won the 100 back in 48.65. Roberts led off Carroll’s winning 200 medley relay (1:34.93) along with classmates Austin Arkes and Kris Kolde plus freshman Gus Karau.<\/p>\n

Brandeis’ 200 free relay came out on top (1:24.79) with the quartet of senior Aaron Brysch, juniro Brandon Parker, senior Aaron Moran and junior Tommy Ervin. Brysch, who has signed with IUPUI, grabbed the 100 free victory courtesy of his 45.12.<\/p>\n

The 400 free relay went to Klein juniors Harry Sale, Eli Hoenshel and Robert Slaughter, with sophomore Eric Akins swimming second (3:03.91). Slaughter swam the individual 50 free event in 20.61, giving him victory in that event.<\/p>\n

Joining Roberts as a freshman on the Longhorn squad will be Jared Butler. The Heath senior took first in the 200 IM in 1:47.53.<\/p>\n

Leonardo Sanchez’ 1:38.33 gave him a 1-tenth margin of victory in the 200 free over Plano senior Kyle Whieldon’s 1:38.43. Bryan junior Harrison Jones posted a winning 48.76 in the 100 fly. In the diving competition, Marshall junior Christopher Law amassed a 544.95-point triumph over Regan senior Nathan Gonzales (535.80).<\/p>\n
