Diogo Ribeiro Sets Two Portuguese Records at Danish Open<\/strong><\/p>\n

Portuguese sprinter Diogo Ribeiro<\/strong> set a pair of records at the Danish Open, part of a multi-national cast at the event that ran from April 15-19.<\/p>\n

The meet produced winners from several countries and four automatic time cuts for the upcoming World Championships.<\/p>\n

Ribeiro booked one of those by going 23.28 in the 50 butterfly. That time is .26 seconds quicker than the mark of 23.54 he set at the Portuguese Championships earlier this month.<\/p>\n

In the 100 fly, he 52.31, just .35 off the A standard. The downs the national mark that had been held since the spring of 2009 by Diogo Carvalho<\/strong> at 52.42. It was the oldest remaining Portuguese men\u2019s record on the books.<\/p>\n
Ribeiro also won the men\u2019s 100 free in 49.16. He\u2019d already obtained the A cut and the Portuguese record on March 31 by going 48.72 in Coimbra.<\/p>\n
Second in the 50 fly, 100 fly and 100 free was countryman Miguel Nascimento.<\/strong> In the 50 fly, Nascimento went 23.49, under Ribeiro\u2019s old record. Nascimento went 49.55 in the 100 free and 52.96 in the 100 fly.<\/p>\n
Nascimento came out on top in the 50 free with a time of 22.20 seconds. He already secured a Worlds cut at the Portuguese championships by tying his national record in 22.16 seconds, .02 under the A cut. Ribeiro was second in 22.44.<\/p>\n

The Portuguese sprinters were part of a slew of foreign swimmers who won at the Bellahoj Swimming Stadium in Copenhagen. Two of the A cuts for Worlds were taken down by five-time Olympian Kristel Kobrich<\/strong> of Chile. She won the 800 free in 8:36.82, besting the field by some 16 seconds. She added an A cut in the 1,500 free (16:16.39) and also won the 400 free.<\/p>\n
The fourth A cut of the meet went to Julie Kepp Jensen<\/strong> of the home country, with her win in the 50 fly. Her time of 26.16 seconds was .16 seconds inside the auto qualifying time.<\/p>\n
Jensen, an Olympian in 2016 and 2020, also won the women\u2019s 50 backstroke in 28.42, just two tenths off the auto cut, and claimed the 100 free in 55.30. In that event, she held off Hong Kong\u2019s Camille Chen,<\/strong> who also won the 200 free.<\/p>\n
Among the intriguing stories of the Danish Open were the swims turned in by Ukrainian 17-year-old Heorghii Lukashev.<\/strong> Displaced from his home country due to fighting there, he\u2019s been taken in by Vejle Swimming Club and has turned heads<\/a>. He finished second, to Indian Olympian and national record holder Sajan Prakash,<\/strong> in the 200 fly. But his time of 1:59.89 was faster than the Danish junior record.<\/p>\n
Lukashev won the 400 IM in 4:24.92, again under the Danish junior mark. He clocked in at 3:59.09 for fourth place in the 400 free.<\/p>\n
Prakash was one of two Indian winners on the week. Vedaant Madhavan<\/strong> won the men\u2019s 800 free, edging Alexander Bjorn by a tenth of a second. Madhavan, a 16-year-old and the son of famed Indian actor<\/a> Ranganathan Madhavan,<\/strong> finished second to Bjorn in the men\u2019s 1,500 free.<\/p>\n
