{"id":502348,"date":"2022-04-08T21:35:06","date_gmt":"2022-04-09T04:35:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=502348"},"modified":"2022-04-08T21:35:06","modified_gmt":"2022-04-09T04:35:06","slug":"pac-12-swimming-awards-leon-marchand-sweeps-swimmer-freshman-of-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pac-12-swimming-awards-leon-marchand-sweeps-swimmer-freshman-of-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Pac-12 Swimming Awards: Leon Marchand Sweeps Swimmer, Freshman of Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pac-12 Swimming Awards: Leon Marchand Sweeps Swimmer, Freshman of Year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arizona State star <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> was named the Pac-12 Men\u2019s Swimmer and Freshman of the Year, <a href=\"https:\/\/pac-12.com\/article\/2022\/04\/08\/pac-12-announces-2022-mens-swimming-diving-postseason-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the conference announced Friday<\/a>. <strong>Dave Durden<\/strong> is the Swim Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona diving coach <strong>Dwight Dumais<\/strong> earned a postseason accolade, having tutored Diver of the Year <strong>Bjorn Markentin.<\/strong> Stanford\u2019s <strong>Jack Ryan<\/strong> is the Freshman Diver of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Marchand, a native of France, led Arizona State to its best NCAAs finish since 1982. He won NCAA championships in the 200 individual medley, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2022-ncaa-mens-championships-leon-marchand-breaks-dressel-200-im-mark-with-137-69\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in an NCAA record of 1:37.69<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-mens-championships-leon-marchand-concludes-magnificent-ncaa-debut-with-200-breast-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 200 breaststroke in 1:48.20<\/a>. He was also second in the 400 IM, winning CSCAA Men\u2019s Swimmer of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Marchand won three Pac-12 titles, in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breast, to go with a leg on the Sun Devils\u2019 victorious 800 freestyle relay. Arizona State finished third at Pac-12s, their best performance in 27 years. The Toulouse native is the second swimmer ever to win Swimmer and Freshman of the year simultaneously, joining USC\u2019s Klete Keller in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Durden led Cal to its seventh NCAA title. It\u2019s the fifth time Durden has led the Golden Bears to the top of the NCAA mountain. He\u2019s the Pac-12 coach of the year for a fifth straight year and 11th time in his career. He also led Cal to its ninth Pac-12 title (the seventh under his leadership).<\/p>\n<p>Markentin was the high-scorer among the divers at Pac-12s. the native of Saskatoon, Canada, finished as the runner-up in the 3-meter springboard, third on platform and fifth on 1-meter. The former Pac-12 Freshman Diver of the Year was an All-American on 1-meter at NCAAs, finishing seventh.<\/p>\n<p>Dumais earned his first men\u2019s Diving Coach of the Year in his fifth season. He was also named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/regan-smith-earns-pair-of-pac-12-postseason-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women\u2019s Diving Coach of the Year earlier this week<\/a>. The Wildcats scored 161 points at Pac-12s.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan finished second on 1-meter springboard at Pac-12s and third on 3-meter. He was also eighth on platform.
