As Dolphins Prep For World Champs Trials, Kaylee McKeown Goes 4:34.96 in 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n

More than 150 of Australia\u2019s top swimmers led by Tokyo Olympic champions Kaylee McKeown <\/strong>and Zac Stubblety-Cook<\/strong> have converged on the Gold Coast for a three-day Swimming Australia High Performance Invitational Meet at the Miami Aquatic Centre \u2013 with nail-biting finishes and a “prizemoney wheel” the order of the opening night\u2019s finals.<\/p>\n

The three-day meet, designed by Dolphins Head Coach Rohan Taylor,<\/strong> will give the swimmers a final competition hit out, before next month\u2019s Australian Championships in Adelaide \u2013 which will double as the selection Trials for this year\u2019s FINA World Championships in Budapest and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n

And the winners are claiming a slice of cash for their efforts with the addition of a “spinning wheel” to determine how much each of the winners will pocket at the end of the night.<\/p>\n

The stars of the Tokyo pool have snuck into the 2032 Olympic city-co-host, joining over 7000 lifesavers, including Australian open water stars Nick Sloman, Bailey Armstrong<\/strong> and Hayden Cotter<\/strong>, who have hit the glitter-strip for the 2022 Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships.<\/p>\n

It comes after Australia\u2019s elite triathletes Tokyo Olympian Matt Hauser<\/strong> and former SA swim star Sophie Linn<\/strong> snatched the first two nominations for the Birmingham Games with thrilling victories on the Broadwater Parklands last Sunday.<\/p>\n

The Coast\u2019s latest big name recruit, dual Olympic backstroke gold medallist<\/a>, McKeown, now under super coach Michael Bohl<\/strong> at Griffith University, didn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n

The triple Tokyo golden girl displayed her brilliance at multi-million dollar refurbished Miami Aquatic Centre \u2013 in the Denis Cotterell <\/strong>Pool of Champions \u2013 named in honor of one of Australia\u2019s greatest distance coaches<\/p>\n

McKeown lined up in the grueling 400m individual medley producing an impressive performance to take the win in 4:34.96 \u2013 with just four swimmers qualifying for in each of the Olympic event finals after cut throat heats sessions.<\/p>\n

While in the very next event, the 200m backstroke, which McKeown won in Tokyo, saw Minna Atherton<\/strong> (Bond, QLD) in 2:11.83 edge out Tahlia Thornton<\/strong> (USC Spartans, QLD) 2:11.85 in a night of nail-biting finishes.<\/p>\n

With McKeown now firmly entrenched in Bohl\u2019s star-studded squad at Griffith, Atherton \u2013 a Bond University Scholarship holder, now finds herself in the Bond pool under its head coach Chris Mooney<\/strong> \u2013 the man who steered McKeown along her golden pathway to Tokyo.<\/p>\n

There was certainly some spirited racing, and none better than in the final event on the program, the women\u2019s 800m freestyle.<\/p>\n

It saw a brave triple Junior World Champion, Lani Pallister<\/strong> (Griffith University), make a welcome return to the winners list, producing the bravest win of the night, in a huge confidence-boosting swim.<\/p>\n

Front-running Pallister opened up a commanding lead through the first 400m (4:10.47), only to see Tokyo Olympian and her Griffith club mate and noted big-finisher Madeleine Gough<\/strong>, gradually whittle the lead away.<\/p>\n

In the end the pair staged a gripping final 50m to the finish \u2013 Pallister digging deep under the flags to hang on and take the win in 8:25.01 to Gough\u2019s 8:25.44.<\/p>\n

In other events, last year\u2019s Australian champion Bowen Gough<\/strong> (Griffith University, QLD) \u2013 agonisingly close to the Olympic team, powered home to win the men\u2019s 200m butterfly in 1:57.77.<\/p>\n

Gough held on to beat his former Nunawading-now-Griffith team mate, Tokyo 400IM bronze medallist, Brendon Smith<\/strong> (1:58.66) with Chandler\u2019s Lucas Humeniuk<\/strong> (2:00.22) third.<\/p>\n

Southport\u2019s Tokyo gold medallist Chelsea Hodges<\/strong> (1:07.29) held on grimly against her Miami -based Tokyo team mate Jenna Strauch<\/strong> (1:07.63) with Mikayla Smith<\/strong>, also Miami, third in 1:08.37<\/p>\n

And both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s 100m freestyle went right down to the wire with nothing separating both finishes \u2013 Madi Wilson<\/strong> (Marion, SA) winning an all-Tokyo women\u2019s final in 53.91, from her team mate and fellow Olympic relay gold medallist Meg Harris<\/strong> (54.04) in a successful comeback from a broken hand. And it was Wilson who spun and swum her way to the top prize – $300 for her efforts, and a winning smile for camerman Wade Brennan, who was poolside shooting for Swimming World.<\/p>\n

While in the men\u2019s event, Sydney\u2019s William Yang <\/strong>(Loreto Normanhurst, NSW) clocked 49.33 to upset his more fancied SA rivals Marion\u2019s Tokyo Olympic duo Zac Incerti<\/strong> (49.55) and Matt Temple<\/strong> (49.59).<\/p>\n

Cody Simpson <\/strong>finished a fourth in 50.09 \u2013 the 50 second barrier avoiding the 25-year-old from Griffith for the second time in a day after his 50.05 in the morning to claim his place in the A final.<\/p>\n

The men\u2019s 400m freestyle saw Rackley\u2019s Sam Short <\/strong>lead all he way to score an impressive victory, clocking 3:50.47 with Matthew Galea <\/strong>(SOPAC, NSW) second in 3:53.11 and Thomas Hauck<\/strong> (All Saints, QLD) third in 3:53.92.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Alexandria Perkins<\/strong> (USC Spartans, QLD) 26.94, out-touched Lily Price<\/strong> (Rackley) 26.98 and Kayla Costa<\/strong> (Nunawading, QLD) 27.19 to take out the 50m butterfly.<\/p>\n

Sam Williamson<\/strong> (Melbourne Vicentre, VIC) 27.84 won the men\u2019s 50m breaststroke from rising former WA star Josuha Yong<\/strong> (USC Spartans, QLD) 28.26 with Stubblety-Cook clocking 27.37 for the second time in the day for third.<\/p>\n

And Isaac Cooper<\/strong> (Rackley) charged to the wall to take the mens\u2019s 50m backstroke in an impressive 25.51 from Incerti (26.00) and Bradley Woodward<\/strong> (26.29).<\/p>\n

Day Two and Three heats sessions start at 9am local time with finals at 5.30pm.<\/strong><\/p>\n
