Tom Dean Also Inside Worlds Cut At National Champs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lewis Burras<\/strong> went within 0.01 of <strong>Duncan Scott\u2019s<\/strong> national 100 freestyle record in 47.88 as he became the first man inside 48secs this year at the <strong>British Championships<\/strong> in Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p>It came minutes after Scott <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/duncan-scott-sets-british-and-commonwealth-record-in-400im\/\">joked he hoped his national 100 free mark of 47.87<\/a> he swam at the 2019 British Championships and matched at last year&#8217;s Olympic selection meet would withstand the quality of Thursday evening\u2019s final.<\/p>\n<p>That followed Scott\u2019s own record-breaking exploits in the 400IM where he set a British and Commonwealth mark of 4:09.18 on a night that served up some real excitement with the meet doubling as trials for the World Championships in Budapest in June.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/results.swimming.org\/swimming\/results\/2022\/bschamps\/\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/duncan-scott-sets-british-and-commonwealth-record-in-400im\/\">Duncan Scott Sets British and Commonwealth 400IM Record<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lewis-burras-goes-third-all-time-in-british-100-free-rankings-with-48-15-prelim-at-world-trials\/\">Day 3 heats wrap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-cracks-27-seconds-in-50m-breaststroke-victories-for-guy-wood-greenbank-at-british-championships\/\">Day 2 finals wrap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-swims-fastest-50-breaststroke-of-2022-luke-greenbank-misses-100-backstroke-final\/\">Day 2 heats wrap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-goes-58-58-to-win-100-breaststroke-at-british-championships-with-paris-in-his-sights\/\">Day 1 finals wrap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-goes-59-55-in-100-breaststroke-prelims-in-second-meet-since-tokyo-gold\/\">Day 1 heats wrap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tokyo-was-the-start-of-the-journey-for-tom-dean-as-he-lines-up-with-peaty-co-at-british-championships\/\">Tokyo Was \u2018The Start Of The Journey\u2019 For Tom Dean<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Burras served notice in the morning prelims when he went 48.15 to go third in the British all-time rankings and matched the consideration time in the process.<\/p>\n<p>He returned to the Ponds Forge pool to split 22.68\/25.20 thereby displacing <strong>Maxime Grousset<\/strong> at the top of the rankings after the Frenchman had gone 48.03 at French nationals a couple of hours previously.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him came Olympic 200 free champion <strong>Tom Dean<\/strong>, whose time of 48.06 was also within the cut of 48.15 for Budapest, with <strong>Jacob Whittle<\/strong> setting an age group record of 48.24.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Richards<\/strong>, part of the victorious 4x200m relay in Tokyo, was fourth in 49.20 with the promise of a fine 4&#215;100 freestyle relay to come.<\/p>\n<p>It was a sliver outside Scott&#8217;s British mark of 47.87 with the six-time Olympic medallist having opted out of the 100 free to focus on the long medley.<\/p>\n<p>Burras said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI watched the men\u2019s 100 free last year having just undergone a hernia operation but I knew those boys were on to something special.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I was going to turn up today and do what I needed to do, I\u2019d have to do something pretty special.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took it out pretty hard, I had to attack my turn, hit my three kicks and keep the breathing pattern going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big focus was try and stay in the middle of the lane and not let either Tom or Jacob ride that wave home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I got to the 10m mark and I told myself \u2018pain is temporary\u2019 and that helped me get my head down.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_502222\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-502222\" data-attachment-id=\"502222\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lewis-burras-0-01-off-british-100-free-record-in-world-leading-47-88-tom-dean-also-inside-worlds-cut-at-national-champs\/2022-british-swimming-championships-2\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Lewis-Burras-celebrates-scaled.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"2560,1707\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Georgie Kerr&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS-1D X Mark III&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;7th April 2022, Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield, England ; 2022 British Swimming Championships\" width=\"351\" height=\"251\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-502222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: Georgie Kerr, British Swimming<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It has been a winding road for the 22-year-old who started out at <strong>Hamilton Aquatics<\/strong> in the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>He went to the <strong>University of Virginia<\/strong> in summer 2018 but his time there was short-lived and he left after about six months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately things didn\u2019t necessarily work out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to look back at that, take accountability for my actions, and things I could have done better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He returned home, and spent six months out of the water, before going out to the <strong>University of South Carolina<\/strong> in June 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Off eight weeks of training he competed at the <strong>US Summer Nationals<\/strong>, winning the B final in 48.5, and stayed until April 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Covid, however, took its toll\u00a0 &#8211; \u201cthe straw that broke the camel\u2019s back\u201d \u2013 and returned home once more to recuperate before being put in touch with<strong> Zoe Baker<\/strong>, former world record holder and head coach at the <strong>Winchester City Penguins<\/strong>, starting his season in October 2021.<\/p>\n<p>There was a junior career alongside the likes of Dean which took in 50m free bronze at the <strong>2018 European Junior Championships.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Watching Tokyo was not necessarily a comfortable experience for Burras but one that stirred him.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s odd. These guys are some of the best swimmers in the world\u2026..and to see them there I knew I had let myself down in a way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it has definitely given me a bit more fire to push on now for this cycle.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Hopkin Wins 50 Free A Week After Covid<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna Hopkin<\/strong> went 24.85 to win the 50 free \u2013 0.50secs outside the cut although she has been preselected to the team courtesy of anchoring the mixed medley relay to Tokyo gold.<\/p>\n<p>Hopkin, coached by <strong>Mel Marshall<\/strong> at Loughborough, was the only woman inside 25secs as she continued to stamp her dominance on the event in British waters.<\/p>\n<p>That despite having tested positive for Covid last week, something she described as \u201ca little bit of a bump in the road!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI tested positive last Wednesday and then it was mainly just a cold and then getting back I felt a bit lethargic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Monday was the first day I started to feel myself: it was quite a quick turnaround coming into this.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This isn\u2019t the focal meet anyway: we\u2019ve got a really busy summer so throwing that into the mix as well (it) has been a bit of an uncertain week but I am pretty happy with how I have swum considering.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Dan Jervis<\/strong> &#8211;
