{"id":502127,"date":"2022-04-06T09:39:10","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T16:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=502127"},"modified":"2022-04-06T12:03:06","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T19:03:06","slug":"live-british-championships-day-two-finals-peaty-dawson-greenbank-wood-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/live-british-championships-day-two-finals-peaty-dawson-greenbank-wood-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"LIVE: British Championships, Day Two Finals: Peaty, Dawson, Greenbank &#038; Wood In Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Olympic champions <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong>, <strong>Kathleen Dawson<\/strong> and <strong>James Guy<\/strong> are among the swimmers featuring in the second finals session of the <strong>British Championships<\/strong> at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p>So too is <strong>Luke Greenbank<\/strong> who squeaked into the 100 back final after twists and turns including ineligibility rules and a swim-off that never happened.<\/p>\n<p>The six-day meet doubles as trials for the <strong>World Championships<\/strong> in Budapest in June and also offers an opportunity for athletes to book a slot on their respective home nations teams for the <strong>Commonwealth Games<\/strong> in July as well as the <strong>European Juniors<\/strong> in Bucharest, Romania.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/results.swimming.org\/swimming\/results\/2022\/bschamps\/\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-goes-59-55-in-100-breaststroke-prelims-in-second-meet-since-tokyo-gold\/\">Day 1 heats wrap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-goes-58-58-to-win-100-breaststroke-at-british-championships-with-paris-in-his-sights\/\">Day 1 finals wrap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-swims-fastest-50-breaststroke-of-2022-luke-greenbank-misses-100-backstroke-final\/\">Day 2 heats wrap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tokyo-was-the-start-of-the-journey-for-tom-dean-as-he-lines-up-with-peaty-co-at-british-championships\/\">Tokyo Was \u2018The Start Of The Journey\u2019 For Tom Dean<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 800 Free<\/h3>\n<p>Budapest qualification time: 8:23.59<\/p>\n<p>Britain has a fine recent history in this event with <strong>Becky Adlington<\/strong> claiming Olympic gold in 2008 and <strong>Jazz Carlin<\/strong> winning silver at Rio 2016 while\u00a0<strong>Joanne Jackson<\/strong> and <strong>Rebecca Cooke <\/strong>both reached the world podium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leah Crisp<\/strong> enjoyed a clear win in 8:45.98.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 50m Breaststroke<\/h3>\n<p>Peaty described his return to the water as a \u201ccomeback\u201d given Sheffield is just his second meet since Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>The three-time Olympic champion went 27.10 in prelims for the fastest time of 2022 and he returned in the evening to crack 27secs in 26.91.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Wilby<\/strong> (27.16) and <strong>Craig Benson<\/strong> (27.55) took second and third.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 50m Butterfly<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Harriet Jones<\/strong> headed the field into the final and she returned to win in a season&#8217;s best of 26.48.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 200m Butterfly<\/h3>\n<p>Budapest qualification time: 1:55.33<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mason Wilby<\/strong> led the heats ahead of <strong>Jay Lelliott<\/strong> and <strong>James Guy<\/strong> in an event in which two slots are up for grabs.<\/p>\n<p>Guy went through the 100 in 54.50 and at 1:24.50 at the final turn, the two-time Olympic relay champion held a clear lead and it was all about the consideration time.<\/p>\n<p>He drove on and touched in 1:56.31 &#8211; outside the cut &#8211; ahead of Wilby (1:57.31) and Lelliott (1:57.77).<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 100m Backstroke<\/h3>\n<p>Budapest qualification time: 59.02<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medi Harris<\/strong> led the way into the final ahead of European champion <strong>Kathleen Dawson<\/strong> who was preselected following sixth in Tokyo last July.<\/p>\n<p>Harris rose ahead and turned first in 28.90 and pulled away down the second 50 to touch in 59.95 ahead of <strong>Lauren Cox<\/strong> (1:00.84) and Dawson (1:01.05).<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 100m Backstroke<\/h3>\n<p>Budapest qualification time: 53.32<\/p>\n<p>The final featured Greenbank after the Olympic men\u2019s medley relay silver medallist squeaked in despite finishing joint ninth with <strong>Craig McNally<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, it transpired that<strong> Sebastian Somerset<\/strong> \u2013 who qualified fifth \u2013 was ineligible to compete in the final as his switch from representing Canada to Britain has not yet been ratified by FINA. That meant a swim-off for Greenbank and McNally only for the pair to decide the former would compete in the A final and the latter in the B.<\/p>\n<p>McNally won his race in 55.03 before Greenbank claimed victory from lane eight in 54.56 ahead of <strong>Brodie Williams<\/strong> (54.68).<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 200m Breaststroke<\/h3>\n<p>Budapest qualification time: 2:23.31<\/p>\n<p><strong>Molly Renshaw<\/strong> is not competing at Ponds Forge having been preselected and in her place teammate and close friend <strong>Abbie Wood<\/strong> led the way into the final.<\/p>\n<p>Wood \u2013 preselected in the 200IM following fourth in Tokyo \u2013 led from start to finish for a clear victory in 2:24.28, outside the cut.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Olympic champions Adam Peaty, Kathleen Dawson and James Guy are among the swimmers featuring in the second finals session of the British Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
