THE top-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team closed its dual meet season with a 173-112 win over No. 3 California this afternoon in Berkeley.

The 50th annual "Big Splash" between the two oldest rivals on the Wst Coast was held on a warm afternoon at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex. With the win the Cardinal improve to 8-0 on the year, 4-0 in the Pac-10.

Next on the agenda for both schools is the Pac-10 Championship at Belmont Plaza March 6-8, then NCAAs at Austin three weeks later. .

Stanford swimmers broke five pool records in the 100 back, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM and 200 back.

The Cardinal opened the meet with a pool record in the 100 back, as defending NCAA champ Peter Marshall took top honors with his 46.25 — just shy of his nation-leading 46.17 against USC two weeks ago. Second was Cal's Alex Lim (46.63) and third was Cardinal Markus Rogan (47.57).

Such records aren't usually kept but it's likely Lim's time is the fastest non-winning 100 back ever in a dual meet. Marshall broke the pool record held by former Stanford NCAA champ and American record-holder Brian Retterer from 1995.

Stanford's Michael Bruce followed Marshall's performance with another pool record, this time in the 100 breaststroke (54.70). Fellow Cardinal Rick Eddy came in third with a 55.81. Bruce broke the Spieker record set in 2001 by Stanford's Anthony Robinson who, a month later at that season's NCAAs, did the unthinkable by beating Cal's Anthony Ervin in the 50 free (19.14-19.23).

Cal's Michael Cavic next won the 100 fly with a 46.10, 10th-fastest performance of all-time and a Golden Bear record too. Obviously that's the nation's fastest time as of today and its also the fastest-ever in a dual meet. The winner at last night's Southeastern Conference Championships in Auburn, Tiger freshman Fred Bousquet, won in a pr and SEC-record 46.70.

The next race was the 1000 free, won by Cardinal Matt Sorlien, who finished 11 seconds ahead of the next competitor and clocked in at 9:00.81. Stanford then recorded a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 free as sophomore Jayme Cramer won in 1:36.41.

In the 50 free, Stanford senior Randall Bal (19.75) edged Cal's Ervin (19.87) to post his seasonal pr. Another Speker record fell as Card Dan Trupin won the 200 IM, clocking 1:45.98. Trupin broke the record held by Cal's Ron Karnaugh (1989). Rogan finished second (1:46.92) followed by teammate Michael Bruce (1:48.83) to complete the sweep.

Trupin is defending Pac-10 champ, Rogan is defending NCAA champ. The former's time from Pac-10s (1:43.83) is also the Cardinal and conference record.

In the one-meter diving competition, Stanford's Adam Peterson took top honors (318.225) while teammate Gavin Olmstead finished third (293.4).

Cramer won his second event with a career-best 1:43.91 in the 200 fly. His old pr was a 1:44.80 from last season's NCAAs. Trupin placed third (1:47.27) as Stanford took two of the top three spots.. Next up was the 100 free, which went to Cal's Duje Draganja in time of 43.41. He was runner-up to Ervin at NCAAs last year.

In the 200 back, Stanford's Dan Westcott broke the Spieker record –previously held by USC's Lenny Krayzelburg — with his pr 1:42.36. Markus Rogan claimed second in 1:44.87. Westcott's old career-best was a 1:44.62 from Pac-10s three years ago.

Sorlien took top honors for the second time as he won the 500 free (4:24.96). In the three-meter diving competition, Stanford diver Adam Peterson placed second (304.725) while teammate Gavin Olmstead was third (291.825).

Bruce broke his second pool record on the afternoon in the 200 breast (1:58.40), toppng his own standard set in 2001. Trupin was second (2:00.67).

In the final event of the day, the 400 free relay, Cal won in a fast 2:54.02 and Stanford took second in 2:57.04.

— Bill Bell

MEN'S NCAA DIVISION 1 DUAL MEET
STANFORD VS.
