{"id":502081,"date":"2022-04-05T10:38:14","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T17:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=502081"},"modified":"2022-04-05T12:34:27","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T19:34:27","slug":"live-british-championships-day-1-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/live-british-championships-day-1-finals\/","title":{"rendered":"LIVE: British Championships Day 1 Finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first finals sessions of the British Championships get under way at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, with the event doubling as trials for World Championships.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/results.swimming.org\/swimming\/results\/2022\/bschamps\/\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 50m Breaststroke<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Imogen Clark<\/strong> was just 0.06 outside her British record as she claimed a dominant victory.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old stopped the clock at 30.10 to rattle her national mark of 30.04 set at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sarah Vasey<\/strong> (31.02) and <strong>Kara Hanlon<\/strong> (31.13) rounded out the podium.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50m Backstroke<\/h3>\n<p>Only 0.54 separated the field at the touch with <strong>Sebastian Somerset<\/strong> touching in 25.30 ahead of <strong>Scott Gibson<\/strong> (25.45) and <strong>Liam White<\/strong> (25.46).<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200m Freestyle<\/h3>\n<p>Budapest qualification time: 1:56.28<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abbie Wood<\/strong> and <strong>Freya Anderson<\/strong> occupied the centre lanes and were joined by <strong>Freya Colbert<\/strong> in a three-way tussle.<\/p>\n<p>Wood was ahead at the 150 with Anderson coming back in the final 25 but it was the former who touched in 1:57.61, 0.13 outside her PB.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson was 0.02 behind in 1:57.63 with Colbert rounding out the podium in 1:57.90.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 400m Freestyle<\/h3>\n<p>Budapest qualification time: 3:46.34<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dan Jervis<\/strong> led the qualifiers into the final by almost three seconds and he hit out from the front, breathing to his right and eyeballing <strong>William Bell<\/strong>, who was on the Welshman&#8217;s feet.<\/p>\n<p>Jervis pulled away on the penultimate length and touched in 3:46.44 &#8211; just 0.10 outside the qualification standard &#8211; although he has already secured a place in the 1500 free in Budapest following his fifth place in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke Turley<\/strong> (3:48.52) and <strong>Kieran Bird<\/strong> (3:48.58) were second and third respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400IM<\/h3>\n<p>Budapest qualification time: 4:37.96<\/p>\n<p>With no <strong>Hannah Miley<\/strong> or <strong>Aimee Willmott<\/strong> following the pair&#8217;s retirement in late 2021, the event has a new complexion in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Hopes are high for <strong>Katie Shanahan<\/strong> and she led after the opening fly leg only for <strong>Freya Colbert<\/strong> &#8211; the 200 free bronze medallist &#8211; to go ahead on the backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>Colbert remained in the lead after the breaststroke although <strong>Lily Booker<\/strong> reduced the deficit.<\/p>\n<p>Colbert though pulled away on the freestyle to win in a PB of 4:41.27 ahead of Booker (4:43.96) and Shanahan (4:44.01).<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100m Breaststroke<\/h3>\n<p>Budapest qualification time: 59.44<\/p>\n<p>Winning the Olympic title also secured <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> preselection for worlds and he returned on Tuesday evening to win in 58.58.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Wilby<\/strong> secured the second spot in 59.17 with Peaty&#8217;s Loughborough stablemate <strong>Greg Butler<\/strong> third in 1:00.04.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first finals sessions of the British Championships get under way at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, with the event doubling as trials for World Championships.
