Thomas Heilman Blazes To YMCA National Title in 100 Butterfly; Greater Somerset Speeds To Relay Title<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the top age-group swimmers in the country<\/a>, Cavalier Aquatics\/Piedmont\u2019s Thomas Heilman<\/strong> highlighted the second day of the YMCA Short-Course Nationals in Greensboro with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly on Tuesday night. Heilman, who has set a bevy of NAG standards during his career, delivered a time of 46.59 to win the event by more than two seconds over York\u2019s Daniel Gordon<\/strong> (48.65).<\/p>\n

However, Gordon helped York take top honors in the 200 freestyle relay, as he anchored his team to a come-from-behind winning mark of 1:21.02. Gordon split 19.59 for his leg and was joined on the relay by Carlos Hidalgo<\/strong>, Thomas Smolinski<\/strong> and Nathan Welker<\/strong>. Piedmont was the silver medalist in 1:21.14, with Heilman leading off in 19.78.<\/p>\n

Heilman also helped Piedmont to gold in the 400 medley relay, with the team going 3:14.24. Heilman split 45.67 on the butterfly leg, and was joined by Teddy Cross <\/strong>(backstroke), Matthew Heilman<\/strong> (breaststroke) and Will Browne<\/strong> (freestyle).<\/p>\n

Greater Somerset was the winner of the women\u2019s 200 freestyle relay, as the foursome of Anna Moesch<\/strong>, Catherine Meisner<\/strong>, Caitlyn<\/strong> Hughes<\/strong> and Emily Thompson<\/strong> clocked a time of 1:31.77. Powered by Moesch\u2019s leadoff leg of 22.22, Greater Somerset fended off Spartanburg, which was timed in 1:31.85. Thompson returned to the pool later in the session to take second place in the 100 butterfly, as her time of 53.06 was narrowly bettered by the 53.04 of Grey Davis<\/strong> (Piedmont).<\/p>\n

Greater Somerset capped the night with another relay triumph as Thompson, Meghan Sharma<\/strong>, Meisner and Moesch won the 400 medley relay in 3:40.99.<\/p>\n

Posting a time of 1:54.91, Leah Shackley<\/strong> (Blair) won the women\u2019s 200 backstroke by exactly a second over Sarah Rodrigues<\/strong> (North Jersey). For the men, Tommy Janton<\/strong> claimed a three-second triumph, as he touched the wall in 1:42.49. Janton was 1:42.00 during prelims.<\/p>\n

Victories in the 200 breaststroke races went to Schroeder’s Tori Brostowitz<\/strong> (2:14.23) and Birmingham’s Ethan Schwab<\/strong> (1:57.39).<\/p>\n
