I: Auburn’s Hungry Tigers Are One Day Away from Dual SEC Titles

AUBURN, Ala., February 22. THE Fat Lady may not have begun warbling just yet but she's primed and ready to start the concert.

With just one day of competition remaining in the 2003 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the Auburn women have pulled out to a 107-point lead over defending champ Florida (560-453), with Georgia hanging tough in third (451). Alabama (216) and South Carolina (210) are dueling for fourth.

The Tiger men, sextuple-defending champs and winners of nine of the last 10 championships, are No. 1 by a whopping 173.5 points (627.5-454) over Florida with Georgia (336) a solid third.

“I’m very pleased with the overall performance by the team,” Auburn coach David Marsh said. “On the men’s side, in the morning, we had 18 finalists and one consolation finalist. That is one of the best morning qualifying rounds we have ever had. We are in position to swim well and claim our seventh SEC championship in a row. On the women’s side, we were hoping to have over a 100 point lead after today. We accomplished that goal, but we haven’t won just yet.”

Auburn won eight of 13 overall golds tonight with Florida taking three and Georgia and Kentucky one each.

On the women's side Auburn, whcih despite the fact that it is defending NCAA Division 1 champ has NEVER won an SEC ladies' title, was expected to be strong and deep. The Tigers handily defeated Stanford in a dual meet at The Farm last November to first take over the No. 1 spot in the pools, then solidified their grip on the top spot by thrashing Florida in a dual meet here the final Friday of last month.

But the Tiger men, with youngsters like Eric Shanteau, were something of a question mark — at least until the arrival of rookie Fred Bousquets from France in January.

On opening night the fast French freshman took the measure of the conference's best sprinters by winning the 50 free in a pr 19.57, then contributed a sizzling leg to the winning 200 free relay. This evening he kept up the beat by winning the 100 butterfly in an SEC-record 46.70. Then he anchored the 400 medley relay in an Ervinesque 42.59, fastest split of the race — as was his 19 flat too.

And remember: this is a kid who, prior to January, had never seen a yards pool, never swum in one and was completely untested in American collegiate competition — arguably the toughest test in swimming, week in and week out.

So…what'll he do for an encore? How 'bout dos mas golds this evening in the 100 free and 400 sprint relay as Auburn wraps up the title, throws down the gauntlet and says "Texas who?"

*  *    *     *      *

As has been the case throughout the meet and, really, for the last four years, Auburn's women were led by the non-pareil senior Maggie Bowen, who won two more races and helped herself to a pair of SEC records in the process.

She began her night's work by racing to her second individual medley gold of the meet and her second conference record too. On Thursday she broke her own SEC standard in the 200 IM with a nation-leading 1:55.73, sixth on the all-time performances' list (Bowen's already the American/NCAA record-holder with her 1:53.51 from last season's collegiate championships.)

Tonight in the 400 IM, she raced to a national No. 1 4:05.82, just off her NCAA-winning 4:04.69 from last sseason — which in turn is "only" history's third-best time ever. No. 2 is former Floridian Tracy Caulkins' 4:04.63 that, when swum at the U.S. Nationals in April of 1981 at Harvard, was the American record. That time stayed as the AR until former Stanford All-America Summer Sanders broke it with the current American/NCAA record 4:02.28 from the 1992 collegiate title-meet in Austin — site of this year's men's DI Championship.

For Bowen to go 4:05.8 at SECs is akin to Ervin going 19.15 for the 50 at Pac-10s, only Ervin swam just two laps and Bowen swam eight imes that number! (Hey, Anthony, we still love ya' baby.)

“I’m more than happy to break this record,” Bowen said. “I’ve waited three years to finally get it. I’m glad to go out of my last SEC meet this way. I’ve been very blessed. God has given me a talent, wonderful coaches and awesome teammates.”

She wasn't done yet. A few races later, she won the 100 breast in 1:00.05, not far off national-leader Tara Kirk of Stanford's 59.74 from earlier in the season.

Bowen has now splashed to nine individual titles during her four-year SEC career in four different events — 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 fly and 100 breast.

To make sure Bowen didn't become "fat and sassy" following her individual wins tonight, Marsh had her swim the breaststroke leg of the Tiger 400 medley relay. She responded with a solid 1:01.06 split as Auburn won by about three quarters of-a-second over Georgia.

Auburn also got solid assistance for Bowen on the women's side from freshman Lauren Duerk, fourth in the 400 IM (4:15.66); junior Heather Kemp, who won the 200 free by .02 over Georgia's Maritza Correia, American/
NCAA record-holder in the 50 free; backstroker Kirsty Coventry, who won the 100 in a pr and Auburn-record 53.38, then led off the victorious medley relay; and Margaret Hoelzer, who pushed Georgia froshwoman Mary DeScenza to an SEC record in the 100 fly (52.43) while splashing to a pr and Auburn-record 52.53 for the silver.

Some other leading ladies' performances inclued Georgia rookie Sarah Poewe's 1:00.51 pr in the 100 breast; DeScenza's pr 1:45.32 for the bronze in the 200 free; Auburn's Jenni Anderson's pr 53.88 for runner-up in the 100 back; Florida freshman Jamie Reid's pr 4:13.59 for third in the 400 IM plus her 54.38 for fourth in the 100 back; and Alabama froshwoman Candace Weiman's pr 53.30 for the 100 fly (fourth).

*    *     *     *     *

On the men's side, Gator freshman Ryan Lochte, who's proving himself a real "find" for UF coach Greg Troy, was sensational (again!). After finishing runner-up to Auburn freshman George Bovell in the 200 IM plus leading off the Gators' SEC record-setting 800 free relay Thursday in 1:35.36, Lochte won the 400 IM tonight in a pr and national No. 1 3:43.31.

The time is just off former Gator Greg Burgess' SEC record 3:42.96 from the '94 Championships here. Second was another "rookie," Auburn's Eric Shanteau, who swam to a second-place finish with his 3:45.91 — second-fastest in Tiger history.

“It feels great to win the 400 after finishing second in the 200 IM last night. My goggles were bothering me before we started, but I just focused on the race and didn’t think about them. I came out and swam as hard as I could,” Lochte said.

Next came young Mr. Bousquet's "shocker" in the 100 fly, where his SEC record-breaking 46.70 was good enough to defeat teammate and runner-up finisher Andy Haidinyk (pr 46.91), Florida's Gabe Mangabeira (46.92) and Alabama's defending NCAA 200 fly champ Stefan Gherghel (47.04).

“It feels awesome to win this race. I won last night and that was great, but to come out here and win again in the SEC is just awesome,” the winner declared.

Any butterflys?

"No, my coach just told me 'These are the blocks, this is the touchpad, you get here fastest after four laps and you'll win the race' and that's what I concentrated on doing."

Florida got on the board when defending NCAA 200 free champ Adam Sioui won in a pr and Gator-record 1:34.58, No. 1 nationally. Auburn's Bovell, 200 IM champ, was next (1:35.30) with Florida's Carlos Jayme (pr 1:35.48) and Auburn's Clay Kirkland (1:35.95) completing the top four spots.

“It feels great to come out here and win this event for the second year. I have been slowed a little by injuries, but I have come back from that and have been swimming very well. I had a good 500 last night and that helped me get ready for tonight,” Sioul — a member of Canada's national team — said.

Tiger Pat Calhoun reignited Auburn's win streak as he came home first in the 100 breast (52.85) with teammate Mark Gangloff (53.53) runner-up. To make sure that duo didn't feel lonely at the top, Tiger Justin Caron went 53.67 for third and an Auburn sweep. Calhoun's time is fastest nationally and just off his pr 52.68, 11th on the all-time performances' list.

(The Auburn record is 52.62 by Dave Denniston from the '01 NCAAs at College Station.)

“This is my third SEC title in four years,” Calhoun said. “It feels great to win it again. I had a great race and having my teammates finish second and third makes it even more special.”

Florida got its second win of the night when 100 fly bronze-medalist Mangabeira won his first SEC title with a pr 46.80 in the 100 back. Louisiana State's Evan Martinec (47.36) won the silver and Tiger Bryce Hunt the bronze (47.50). Martinec was top-qualifier (pr and LSU-record 46.98).

The medley relay saw the Tigers set their second relay standard of the meet,a nation-leading 3:09.17, breaking their old mark of 3:09.70. Hunt lead off in 47.32, Calhoun followed with a 52.62 breast leg, then Haidinyk added a 46.64 fly leg. Now it was Superman's turn (aka Fred Bousquet). The rookie more than lived up to his star billings, clocking the fastest anchor of the race –a 42.59.

In the men’s 3-meter springboard competition, Auburn’s Caesar Garcia entered the evening in third and moved up to claim second with a score of 600.15 behind Kentucky’s Clayton Moss (624.25).

“What more can I say,” diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. “He has put in a lot of hard work and dedication and continues to get better. Breaking 600 points is like breaking a barrier for a diver. He really had no mistakes, he just got beat by a better diver today.”

“I thought the competition went great,” Garcia said. “I can’t really say it is a culmination yet, but hopefully this is a great preview for what is to come for me.”

“It’s pretty cool to win. I have won twice before, but to win my senior year is special. This championship is a lot of pressure, I just tried to relax and help my team,” winner Moss said.

Expect the singing to begin after this evening.

2003 SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
JAMES E.
