{"id":501690,"date":"2022-03-28T13:55:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T20:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=501690"},"modified":"2022-03-28T13:55:00","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T20:55:00","slug":"john-hargis-out-after-six-seasons-as-head-coach-at-pitt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/john-hargis-out-after-six-seasons-as-head-coach-at-pitt\/","title":{"rendered":"John Hargis Out After Six Seasons as Head Coach at Pitt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>John Hargis Out After Six Seasons as Head Coach at Pitt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>John Hargis<\/strong> will not return as the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving teams, the university announced Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Hargis has spent the last six season in charge of the program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/john-hargis-named-head-coach-pittsburgh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hired just after the 2015-16 season ended<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On behalf of Pitt Athletics, I want to thank John for his work and commitment to Pitt swimming,&#8221; Director of Athletics <strong>Heather Lyke<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburghpanthers.com\/news\/2022\/3\/28\/swimming-diving-lyke-announces-mens-and-womens-swimming-leadership-change.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a school release<\/a>. &#8220;We wish him the very best in his future pursuits. Our work to conduct a national search to find new leadership for our men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming program begins immediately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Panther had several meets cancelled due to COVID-19 in 2021-22. The team qualified three divers \u2013 including <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburghpanthers.com\/news\/2022\/3\/19\/swimming-diving-read-concludes-competition-at-2022-ncaa-championships.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four-year qualifier<\/a> <strong>Amy Read<\/strong> \u2013 and one swimmer (<strong>Cooper van der Laan<\/strong>) <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburghpanthers.com\/news\/2022\/3\/26\/swimming-diving-panthers-complete-competition-at-mens-ncaa-championships.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to NCAAs in 2022<\/a>. Pitt\u2019s men\u2019s team finished 9th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2022-acc-championships\/ncaa-college\/2022\/February\/15?rtn=%2Fresults%2Fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the ACC Championships<\/a>. The women were 11th, both out of 12 teams.<\/p>\n<p>Hargis is well traveled in the college realm. He was the head coach at Penn State from 2008-13, where he tutored 74 All-America performances. He was an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2011 World University Games. He was the head coach of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock\u2019s women\u2019s team in 2007-08.<\/p>\n<p>The native of Clinton, Ark., also had stints as an assistant coach at UNLV from 2002-03, Penn State from 2003-06 and Arkansas-Little Rock in 2006-07. He was the associate head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penn-state-head-coach-john-hargis-heading-to-auburn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at Auburn from 2013-16<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hargis won a gold medal in the pool for the United States in the medley relay at the 1996 Olympics.
