LEWISBURG, Pa., February 20. PATRIOT League meet records were set in seven of the 10 swimming events on Day 1 of the league swimming & diving championships.<\/p>\n
The meet is underway at the Arthur D. Kinney Natatorium on the campus of Bucknell University through Saturday, Feb. 22. <\/p>\n
The swim of the night came from American's Mark Liscinsky, who "cruised" the 200 IM in 1:47.20, a pr and auto NCAA qualifier. He won by more than three seconds over teammate Dominick Szabo's 1:50.22.<\/p>\n
The host Bison, whose women's team had its most successful and first-ever undefeated dual meet season in 2002-03, are atop the standings on both the men's and women's sides. <\/p>\n
The defending champion Lehigh Mountain Hawks are in second on the men's side, while Navy's women, the 2002 title holders, are in the runner-up spot. <\/p>\n
In the first race of the finals, Bucknell's 200 freestyle relay team of Erica Wild, Darby Golino, Mary Krakowski and Meghan Freese broke the Championship record with a 1:34.94. The former mark of 1:35.24 was set by Army in 1999. The Bison men also won the 200 freestyle relay title with their 1:22.17. <\/p>\n
Records continued to fall on the women's side when Navy freshman Jenn Windstein took to the pool in the 500 freestyle. The rookie's time of 4:54.89 broke the 1995 record of 4:56.20 set by Holy Cross' Colleen Lynch. Windstein bested runner-up Daniela Faas of Bucknell by more than two seconds. <\/p>\n
The charge to the front by the Bucknell women was led by Freese, who was a part of three record-breaking performances. Individually, she broke the 50 free meet mark and was a member of the Bisons' record-breaking 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay squads. <\/p>\n
Freese defended her 50 freestyle title with a time of 23.32, which breaks a 10-year old mark held by former Lehigh star Margaret Grunow — and provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championship. The Bison women's 400 medley relay time of 3:49.54 was six seconds faster than runner-up Lehigh. <\/p>\n
Lehigh freshman Linda Hendrixson claimed the 200 individual medley crown with her 2:05.92. Bucknell's Golino came in second, half a second behind Hendrixson. <\/p>\n
On the men's side, Erwan Jeffroy led a 1-2 American sweep in the men's 500 freestyle with a record-breaking 4:28.42. Last year's 500 champion Ethan Bassett finished second (4:31.74). Fellow Eagle Liscinsky then broke his own championship record in the 200 individual medley with his sterling 1:47.20. <\/p>\n
The American men's 400 medley relay team of Szabo, Liscinsky, Mike Lawson and Stephen Maher broke their own meet record from a year ago. The squad posted a time of 3:20.71. <\/p>\n
Rounding out the list of winners from the first day are Bucknell's Peter Garvin in the 50 freestyle (20.52), Army's Doug Klein in the three-meter dive (443.0) and the Bison 200 free relay team (1:22.17).<\/p>\n
