NCAA Men’s Championships: Texas Has Top Seed in Two Events; Alvin Jiang Scratches 100 Back B-Final (Heat Sheet)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Friday night finals session at the NCAA Men’s Championships in Atlanta will feature action in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, and those individual events will be followed by three-meter diving finals and then the 400 medley relay.<\/p>\n

After prelims, Texas’\u00a0Alvin Jiang<\/strong> scratched out of the 100 backstroke consolation final after qualifying 14th. Jiang chose to focus his efforts on the 100 fly and 400 medley relay during the same session rather than attempt three swims in the span of less than two hours.<\/p>\n

The finals session will kick off with the 400 IM, where the Longhorns’\u00a0Carson Foster<\/strong> is the top seed ahead of Cal’s\u00a0Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong>, but looming are defending national champion\u00a0Bobby Finke<\/strong> of Florida and 200 IM winner and record-setter\u00a0Leon Marchand\u00a0<\/strong>of Arizona State. Up next is the 100 fly, where Stanford’s\u00a0Andrei Minakov\u00a0<\/strong>was the only man under 44 in prelims.<\/p>\n

The 200 free features a loaded A-final with Texas’\u00a0Drew Kibler<\/strong> as the top seed as well as 500 free winner\u00a0Matt Sates\u00a0<\/strong>of Georgia, defending champion\u00a0Kieran Smith<\/strong> of Florida, this year’s fastest swimmer in Arizona State’s\u00a0Grant House<\/strong> and 50 free winner\u00a0Brooks Curry<\/strong> of LSU.\u00a0Minnesota’s\u00a0Max McHugh<\/strong> will take a run at the American record in the 100 breaststroke after he became just the second swimmer to ever break 50 in prelims, and Indiana’s\u00a0Brendan Burns\u00a0<\/strong>holds the top spot in a very competitive 100 backstroke field.<\/p>\n
