BOBBY Bowden is smiling and all's right with the world.

Bowden, the venerble Florida State University football coach, says he's "just so proud " of the Lady Seminoles' swimming and diving team tonight after FSU raced to a 207-195 advantage over Virginia on opening day of the 24th annual Atlantic Coast Conference women's swimming and diving championships.

The meet is underway at North Carolina's Koury Natatorium and continues through Saturday.

Maryland's Terrapins stand third with 185 points and Coach Frank COmfort's Lady Tar Heels — treble-defending champs — are next (183) — followed by Clemson (115), NC State (96), Duke (56), and Georgia Tech (55).

The 'Noles got off to a flying start by winning the 200 free relay in 1:31.91, a mere .07 quicker than Maryland and good enough for an NCAA "B" cut. The FSU team consisted of Jennie Lyes, who would go on to score a third in the 50 free; Liz Parkinson, Emily Breen and British import Emma Dutton on the anchor.

Coach Chris Ip's Clemson Lady Tigers placed third (1:32.63). Ip is in his first-year at the Clemson helm after having made his mark as coach at Indian River Community College in Florida. At IRCC, his teams dominated the NJCAA Championships for msot of the '90s and the first three years of the new century.

In a true nail-biter that couldn't have been any closer, Maryland's Shandra Johnson edged out Virginia's Rachael Burke to win the 500 yard freestyle by one one-hundreth of a second, 4:44.25-4:44.26. Both swimmers made the NCAA auto cut too.

The win was the Terp senior's initial ACC Championship and a school-record too. North Carolina's Kelly Weeks placed third with a consideration 4:48.39.

FSU's Canadian import, Andree-Anne Leroy, a transfer from Washington State, made her first ACCs a memorable one as she powered to a pr and Seminole record of 1:59.59 en route to gold in the 200 IM.

Virginia's Mirjana Bosevska was next (2:00.67) as the top two finishers made the NCAA auto standard. Third was unsung Maryland freshman Inbal Levavi, an Israeli, who went 2:01.73 with a pr 2:01.43 in the prelims.

North Carolina's Christy Watkins defended her 50 free title from last season, winning in 22.67 to Virginia's Andrea Georoff's pr 22.74. It was Watkins' fourh-consecutive ACC two-lap triumph, becoming the first swimmer to achieve this feat in the 50.

Virginia's Andrea Georoff finshed second with a time of 22.74, and again the top two make the NCAA "A" standard.

Florida State put the hammer down and took over the top spot with its sweep of the 1-meter diving competition, with.Chelsie Lerew winning (290.65), while teammate Tiffany Manning finished second (279.10) and Courtney McClow third (275.30).

Maryland won the 400 medley relay with its 3:41.52, Megan Knepper leading off in 55.07. Virginia placed second with its 3:42.72 and froshwoman Brielle White led off for the Cavaliers in a pr 54.35 — fastest split of the race. Florida State came in third (3:42.78).

Action continue today (Feb. 21) with preliminaries beginning at 11:00 AM EST and the finals starting at 7:00 PM.

The Tar Heels have won the championship a whopping 15 times in 23 years. UNC's strengths are in the stroke events so it will be interesting to see how the Tar Heels fare in making up their 20-point deficit.

— Bill Bell

24TH ANNUAL ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

MAURICE J.
