﻿{"id":500886,"date":"2022-03-24T07:43:22","date_gmt":"2022-03-24T14:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=500886"},"modified":"2022-03-24T09:27:04","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T16:27:04","slug":"2022-ncaa-mens-championships-matthew-sates-crushes-408-in-500-freestyle-prelims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2022-ncaa-mens-championships-matthew-sates-crushes-408-in-500-freestyle-prelims\/","title":{"rendered":"2022 NCAA Men&#8217;s Championships: Matthew Sates Crushes 4:08 in 500 Freestyle Prelims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2022 NCAA Men\u2019s Division I Swimming and Diving Championship continued with the prelims of the 500-yard freestyle from McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia looked to land a couple in the finals with top-seeded <strong>Matthew Sates<\/strong> and teammate <strong>Jake Magahey.<\/strong> Meanwhile, Arizona\u2019s<strong> Brooks Fail<\/strong>, Texas\u2019 <strong>Luke<\/strong> <strong>Hobson<\/strong> and Florida\u2019s <strong>Kieran Smith<\/strong> all had something to say about it as well.<\/p>\n<p>In heat 4, Florida\u2019s <strong>Bobby Finke<\/strong> went a 4:11.77 from Lane 1 to put in the best time of the first few heats. But it was only fast enough to take the ninth seed and land in the B final.<\/p>\n<p>In the next heat, Florida\u2019s <strong>Kieran Smith<\/strong> held off<strong> Ross Dant<\/strong> in a close heat. Smith touched in 4:10.53, while Dant touched in 4:10.66.<\/p>\n<p>In heat 6, Texas\u2019 <strong>Luke Hobson<\/strong> pulled away to touch the wall in 4:10.38. Teammate David Johnston was next in 4:10.96.<\/p>\n<p>In the final heat, Georgia\u2019s <strong>Matthew Sates<\/strong> cranked it into another level about the 350 mark and catapulted past a couple of swimmers. He kept up the pace and won the heat in 4:08.73. Teammate<strong> Jake Magahey<\/strong> was next at 4:09.22 and Florida\u2019s<strong> Alfonso Mestre<\/strong> touched in 4:09.464<\/p>\n<p><strong>The NCAA Finalists<\/strong><br \/>\n1.
