NCAA Men’s Championships: Sates, Marchand, Crooks Hold Top Seeds for Thursday Prelims (Heat Sheet)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The individual portion of the NCAA Men’s Championships will begins Thursday morning at 10 a.m. ET in Atlanta with three individual events, the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle. Qualifying in one-meter diving will also take place at the end of the morning session.<\/p>\n

The 500 freestyle will feature Georgia freshman\u00a0Matt Sates<\/strong> as the top seed after he defeated American-record holder\u00a0Kieran Smith<\/strong> and defending NCAA champion\u00a0Jake Magahey<\/strong> to win the event at the SEC Championships last month. Sates, a native of South Africa, broke multiple world junior records on the FINA World Cup circuit in the fall before enrolling at Georgia this semester, and he will swim next to his teammate, Magahey, in the final heat of the event. Smith, meanwhile, was the Olympic bronze medalist in the 400-meter free at the Tokyo Olympics last summer. Texas freshman\u00a0Luke Hobson<\/strong> is also seeded under 4:10, while Arizona’s\u00a0Brooks Fail<\/strong> and NC State’s\u00a0Ross Dant<\/strong> should be in the mix, and another 400 free Olympic finalist, Michigan’s\u00a0Jake Mitchell<\/strong>, is seeded 12th.<\/p>\n

In the 200 IM, 2021 champion Shaine Casas\u00a0<\/strong>of Texas A&M has moved onto the professional ranks, and the top two seeds both hail from Arizona State University,\u00a0Leon Marchand<\/strong> and\u00a0Grant House<\/strong>. Marchand is the only swimmer in America who has been under 1:40 this season, and he got his first NCAA Championships off to a huge start with a 1:29.96 split anchoring the Sun Devils’ 800 freestyle relay Wednesday night. The Cal duo of Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong> and\u00a0Destin Lasco<\/strong> return after placing second and third, respectively, last season, and Texas star sophomore\u00a0Carson Foster<\/strong> is the fifth seed.<\/p>\n

The splash-and-dash is led by a new name on the scene, Tennessee freshman\u00a0Jordan Crooks<\/strong>, and he is seeded just ahead of LSU’s\u00a0Brooks Curry<\/strong>, Cal’s\u00a0Bjorn Seeliger<\/strong> (the runnerup last year) and NC State’s\u00a0David Curtiss<\/strong>. A total of 10 swimmers have already record times under 19 seconds this season, including Texas’\u00a0Cameron Auchinachie<\/strong>, Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Youssef Ramadan<\/strong>,\u00a0Florida’s\u00a0Adam Chaney<\/strong>, Virginia’s\u00a0Matt Brownstead<\/strong>,\u00a0Ohio State’s\u00a0Hunter Armstrong<\/strong> and Arizona State’s\u00a0Matt Dolan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
